In the last three months we have had major violent event after event, that range from home grown terrorism to police brutality. Our social media pages are filled with hashtags, beautiful pictures of hope and courage and videos of gruesome deaths. We vow to change and to never let these events happen again and then we simply forget...
Have we been so desensitized to violence? Honestly, I'm no longer shocked about what I hear on the news whenever someone attacks a city or a school, and that's so horrible to say. We come home from work and we see murder after murder and we are not phased, many of us are apathetic to the hundreds of deaths that go on in our communities. What does that say about us? Are we even human anymore? Beyond hashtag activism. The answer is pretty clear, we don't.
Look at these faces, these innocent children were gunned down by a man that's not worthy of a single character in this article. A school of children was gunned down. There was no abuse, bullying, just a sick perversion by a madman. This horrible crime happened four years ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and nothing was done. This is not a piece on gun control or reform, this piece is a reflection of the society we live in today, where we forget the death and tragedy until the next one.
18 children were murdered, six teachers were murdered. A nation was devastated, a nation forgot.
This is not a time for talking or for prayer, this is a time for action. Hundreds of minorities are killed everyday. Five officers were slain in Dallas, Texas. What now? When will we take action and bring accountability to all those who cause these violent acts whether they are authority figures or not.
I'm exhausted, my mind is plagued with all the violence and death around me. This goes beyond major events that you will only see on CNN.
I'm wary of the violence in my city. Miami portrayed as the city of sunshine and beaches turned dark and grey when they gunned down a teenage boy next to my home. His body twitched and shook until his soul left his body. I'm tired of the violence that plagues Miami, where children are gunned down because of violence. We're tired of hearing about children like King Carter, a six-year-old boy who's entire life was robbed from him by teenagers whose anger and ignorance took a child from their family. I'm tired of seeing people abused and killed by officers who lack the training to do their job.
I'm tired of the lack of humanity that we live with, I'm tired of it all...until I forget again.
Welcome to the United States of America, land of the free and forgetful.
