There was a moment in time during my life when I was on a flight almost every three weeks. It was so incredibly ridiculous and chaotic that The Tampa International Airport Staff were beginning to recognize me when going through the security and baggage check. Truth be told, no matter how insane it was, I never minded it because traveling is one of my life passions. Traveling grows you as a person and teaches you a variety of life lessons you would never experience staying in one place. After countless hours spent in airports, I have learned that the perfect carry-on bag can be a lifesaver! Regardless of where I am in the world, my carry-on packing routine is pretty standard. Whether you're about to jump on a one-hour commuter flight or fly across the world, this packing guide will ensure you are properly equipped with all the essentials to help you have a comfortable journey.
1. Get the perfect bag.
I would personally recommend any of the Vera Bradley Duffle bags as they are rather large. You want a large bag so you can fit all the necessary items. I specifically chose this bag because it's large, black (so it does not get dirty fast) and has been my travel companion for quite some time now.
2. Travel Blanket or Pillow.
Airplanes are usually kept very cold and depending on what airline, you may not be provided with a pillow or blanket as that is strictly reserved for first class. Every now and then, you may be able to request a free blanket while other times you will be asked to pay. My personal preference is a Travel Blanket and what I recommend is purchasing a Pier 1 Fuzzy Throw. I own several different prints including cheetah, all white and the one below! They are by far the softest blankets ever created. I've received so many compliments from fellow travelers exclaiming, "Why did I never think of that?" One of these blankets and you are sure to have a comfortable flight.
3. Snacks.
Most Airlines provide some sort of snack for purchase on the plane. What I usually like to do is find some healthy options inside the airplane terminals that I can snack on throughout my journey, especially when I know I'll be traveling for more than four hours. Keep some yummy snacks in your bag to help you survive the day!
4. Repeat after me — hydration.
Traveling will dehydrate you! Drinking lots of water before and during your flight will help with jet lag and fatigue. In addition, one of the worst side effects of traveling for me is tired eyes and dry lips. To combat this, purchase a small bottle of eye cream and lip balm. Applying it regularly through the day will help skin.
5. Cleanse.
After a long day of traveling, you are not going to feel clean. I constantly complain after a long flight of smelling like the airport. Make sure that you have the essential toiletry items in your duffle bag. Hand sanitizing gel is an absolute must. My hand sanitizer of choice is from Bath and Body Works. It is the perfect travel size and goes along with the airport regulations so you don't end up having to leave it behind in the security line. It's also sold for under two dollars and smells amazing.
6. Refresh.
I always carry my makeup bag on the plane inside my duffle bag. This gives me time in-between and after flights to freshen up, reapply concealer and mascara to leave me looking fresh. I use my Victoria's Secret Makeup bags that I usually get for free after spending $75 and more on underwear or other items. They're absolutely great for travel.
Mints! Mints! Mints! Plus a travel toothbrush and toothpaste. You can buy travel tooth brushes and tooth paste almost anywhere. This includes Wal-Mart, Target, gas stations or even in the terminal. I always have one in my carry-on bag so I can brush my teeth in the airport bathrooms. Make sure to purchase one with a case to keep everything sanitary.
Don't forget your brush. If you're spending long hours on the plane, your hair might end up resembling something like bed-head by the end of your journey. Bring a brush in your carry-on bag so you can go to the nearest ladies room after your flight and comb through your hair. I use a basic a wooden brush as my carry-on pick of choice that I bought at Target for $12.
7. Entertainment.
The Golden Rule of traveling should be to always bring your phone charger. Make sure you not only have your phone charger but a charger with a USB cord. There are many planes out there that have charging options for your cell phone through the means of a USB port. If you're flying to a different country, you may want to purchase a universal travel adapter with a USB port, that way you will still be able to charge your phone abroad. I remember spending a week in Prague without one of these, and I was surviving by the good graces of my fellow travel colleagues who had purchased them. They were truly lifesavers.
Also, remember when you are traveling out of the country to contact your cell phone company. Some companies will charge you for roaming fees while others don't. Figure out which one you have because you don't want a surprise bill in the mail after your trip.
And ... don't forget those headphones! You'll need them for listening to music, doing anything on your laptop, or even for watching movies on the plane — which means you don't have to buy the crappy headphones offered by the airline.
8. Important Documents.
Lastly, make sure you always have your Passport or identification on hand when flying. If you lose your identification in the States, you may still be able to travel depending on the airline and the good graces of the airport. Nevertheless, if you lose your passport out of the country, you will not be able to travel under any circumstances until you replace it.
Make sure to have your credit cards and cash on you at all times in case of emergency and never pack expensive items in your checked luggage because you may never see them again. I always pack my valuables with me on my carry-on and the same goes for medicine. Better safe than sorry! Finally, don't forget the 3 -1-1 rule when packing liquids. According to federal regulations, liquids must be under 3.4 ounces and fit in one quart-sized plastic bag. Make sure to carry all the above, in your carry-on bag.
And finally, enjoy your flight! You now have all these essentials to have a comfortable flight. Everyone has different needs and travel styles. Your needs may vary depending on your destination or length or trip. What essentials are you packing in your carry-on bag? Comment Below and let us know.
