Every college major has a stereotype that people cannot get past. People will tell you " that's a really easy major" , "Wow, you have a hard major" or "That major won't get you a job after you graduate". The list goes on and on. But the truth is, every major is hard, every major can be as easy as you make it, and getting a job after you graduate depends on how ambitious you are. So the next time you tell your friend or family member there major isn't good enough, remember that not every person it the same. We all have different talents, strengths, and weaknesses. College is supposed to be focus on those strengths you want to master.
I am a Communication Studies Major, otherwise known as a "COM Major". At my school, we get stereotyped into being lazy, having easy classes, not graduating on time, and not finding a decent job after graduation. Though every school is different with there stereotypes, most people believe what I just said to be at least somewhat true. The reality is, none of that is close to being correct. So I am here to tell you the truth about being a communications studies major.
1) There are so many different sub-categories that are so unique from one another.
You can literally do about anything with Communication. You can be a broadcaster, journalist, in Public Relations, CEO, human resources, marketing, video production, mass media; the list could go on and on.
2) We have some pretty hard classes believe it or not.
For all the people who say COM classes are soooo easy. Why don't you take a wack at it? Let my know if you can differentiate all of the different theories and styles of communication. Spend a few hours writing some essays and see if your brain doesn't explode. Also, most tests are not multiple choice and true or false.
3) Internships are necessary so we will most likely be more ready for the real-world.
For my university, internships are highly recommended. You get to work out in the real world before you graduate. Instead of other majors who can just relax by the pool all summer, COM majors have to work hard for their future.
4) If you go to a state school, scheduling for this major is a pain in the butt.
There are so many Communication Studies students, therefore scheduling gives you anxiety. It's hard enough to get there college, but this extra stress is why some communication studies students can't graduate on time.
5) The professors are the BEST.
Your professor can actually teach and you love to learn from them. Yeah, you have to take night classes time to time but wouldn't you rather learn for the professionals who just got off work instead? I would. They have to some incite and connections.
6) Communication Studies majors are more well rounded and open for new ideas.
Did you know most students who study abroad are Communication Studies majors? We are more open to trying new things and being out of our comfort zone. We thrive on meeting new people and trying a new way of life. It make you a richer person physically and mentally.
7) Writing comes easy to COM students.
Writing essays, articles, you name it - we can do it. In an job in the workforce, you need to be able to write well. Though some communication studies students are terrible at public speaking, some love it. We all are different but one huge similarity is our ability to write which I find amazing.
8) Failing never even crosses their mind. They want to prove the people wrong who think Communication Studies Major is a "joke".
Communication Studies majors know the stereotypes and it makes them angry. They want to go far and are some of the most ambitious people I know. So the next time you judge, just think before you speak.
