Roommates are apart of your life temporarily, but they do make a lasting impact on your life, whether it be positive or negative. My freshman year of college, I expected to meet my lifetime best friend who would make my college experience the best it could possibly be, but instead, I got a 23-year-old roommate. She was never in our room except at night because she worked throughout the day. We barely had one conversation a day and I was too shy to go socialize with the rest of my floor, so you could say I was very lonely my first semester. This really bummed me out and even had me contemplating dropping out of college. I thought I would never make friends and that I would be a sad hippo for the rest of time. She taught me that not everything will be perfect and that's OK.
My first roommate graduated at the end of fall semester, and I got a new roommate spring semester. I was thrilled to have a second chance at making a friend! She was the same age as me, so things looked promising this time around. We even chatted a little before we met each other in the dorms and we somewhat connected. When we met each other, we were polite like strangers are with one another. It was pretty much like that the rest of the semester because both of us were quiet, so we didn't really converse. There was the occasional, "Hey, how was your day?" or "Want these extra cups?" Next door, girls were laughing at wee hours of the night and singing together in the mornings. It depressed me quite a bit because I hadn't made a connection with anyone like that yet. She taught me that you don't always have to be close with someone to be friends.
Now I live in a sorority house and have two roommates who I get a long with very well. We're not all in the room at the same time that much, but sometimes we laugh into the night and sing together in the mornings. They taught me that you should have hope for the future because you just might get everything you ever wanted, like Tina Fey's and Amy Poehler's relationship with each other.
