“This was a story about a girl who could find infinite beauty in anything, any little thing, and even love the person she was trapped with. And I told myself this story until it became true. Now, did doing this thing help me escape a wasted life? Or did it blind me so I didn’t want to escape it? I don’t know, but either way I was the one telling my own story…”
–The Brothers Bloom
I often find myself falling back on some of my favorite movies on days like today; gentle rain falling against my window, still dark enough to look like 5 a.m., the sound of cars passing over wet streets filling background noise. Movies are works of art meant to suit whatever emotion you are feeling. Sad movies, holiday movies, comedies, horror movies, doomsday thrillers; you name it. Here are the top 10 movies that are great to watch on rainy days.
10. "A Bag of Hammers"
Get ready for your heart strings to pull. This movie features Jason Ritter and Jake Sandvig as two local scam artists. While trying to make a quick buck and floating through life, these two learn to develop some responsibility when the neighbor’s abandoned son walks into their lives. You’ll want to bring your biggest box of tissues and a really plush blanket for this one.
9. "Halloweentown"
It is getting closer to the Halloween season, and this rainy day just makes me wish for Fall... colorful leaves, brisk temperatures, and boots for days. If you haven’t seen Halloween town, I suggest you do. Today. This holiday classic is about a girl named Marney who learns a secret about her family. An evil presence has fallen over Halloweentown, and with her new found powers, she and her family come together in this film.
8. "This is the End"
In this comedy thriller, many faces in Hollywood are pitted against each other when they learn the end of the world is near. People who were once friends become potential enemies in the attempt to survive. Who will live? Who will die? Pop this in your DVD player and be ready to cry from the tears falling down your face.
7. "2012"
John Cusack stars in this movie that is filled with one global catastrophe to the next. After being divorced, this struggling writer tries to maintain his relationship with his children when the world starts falling apart. Watch as this all star dad rescues his family from certain death in this captivating movie.
6. "The Day After Tomorrow"
This is one of my favorite “doomsday” movies of all time. Plus, I mean, Jake Gyllenhaal. This movie is all about braving the elements in extreme circumstances as a father tries to rescue his son from the next Ice Age. Tsunamis, tornados, blizzards, torrential downpours; this movie has it all when it comes to the end of the world. Put that bag of popcorn in the microwave and be amazed at what the power of love can accomplish.
5. "Insidious"
OK, so maybe I’m biased, but this is one of my favorite scary movies of all time. It pretty much makes my lists for any given movie countdown. Find out when your dreams become more than dreams, but stray too far… You may not make it back as yourself…
4. "Project X"
Preheat your oven and throw in that tombstone, crack open your PBR, and get ready to party with these crazy high schoolers. I mean, it’s raining… so why not get drunk with your favorite unlikely bunch of high school partiers. Watch as one day goes from an amazing birthday party planned by friends to a full blown riot in this movie based on some true events in Australia.
3. "Twister"
Twister is always one of my go to movies when the weather is stormy. I have been obsessed with it since I was a young kid… two VHS tapes, and a second DVD later, it is still one of my favorites to watch on gloomy days. The conditions are perfect on this day for some storm chasers to get some much needed information about twisters in order to better predict them and warn the public so they can make it to safety. Your heart will be racing as you follow along this high intensity movie.
2. "Burlesque"
Christina Aguilera and Cher star in this film when a small town girl from Iowa (holla!) moves to LA on a whim to try and fufill her dream of making it big. As one thing after the other seems to be going wrong for Ali (Christina Aguilera), she finds herself in a position never thought imaginable, and the rest is history.
