Throughout the past four or five years that I have had Netflix, I have gone through a great deal of shows. From dramas to comedies, each one of them changed my life in some way. Below is a list, in no particular order, of some of the most influential shows that I have watched and my reasons behind why I believe them to have been so influential.
1. Glee
Glee was an obvious choice for me to include on this list for the pure reason that it is a show that is/was so revolutionary. Glee addressed a lot of topics from coming-out of the closet to teenage pregnancy to dealing with everyday struggles that high school brought about. It did all of this and had some kill musical numbers. Glee taught me to be more accepting, to see diversity and appreciate that its there and embrace it.
2. Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl pushed the limits for primetime network television and garnered a great deal of flack from parents across the US. It showed high school aged children behaving in a way not yet depicted on TV. Now granted this didn't really directly influence or even reflect my life however the characters various traits have influenced me a great deal. Blair showed me to be fearless and that a good fashion sense can save anything. Serena taught me that its never too late to reinvent yourself. Dan taught me to not be a total jerk.
3. Ugly Betty
Ugly Betty. In my opinion is one of the best TV shows ever. I mean how couldn't it be with the beautiful America Ferrera. Ugly Betty is based in NYC in the high stakes fashion industry and follows the journey of an "ugly" girl named Betty Suarez and how she navigates her way through it all. Betty taught me to be fearless, she taught me that just cause I don't fit in that it doesn't mean I don't belong.
4. Dance Academy
Dance Academy is basically the main cause of my obsession with Australia and also ballet. Although I know I'll never be able to reach the caliber of dance that the characters in this show are at I can still dream! And also dream of one day traveling to Australia.
5. How To Get Away With Murder
This show, along with the iconic movie Legally Blonde, are what influenced me the most to pursue law school. Now there are other contributing factors to me wanting to go to law school but these are thrown in the mix as well. I mean come on a powerful woman who is a lawyer and a law professor who kicks butt, whats not to love? Okay maybe the amount of death and controversy that follows her but hey does any of that matter?
6. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
No shame here, I love this show. Okay I mean I'm a little ashamed but let's be honest who really read this far down the article anyway? MLP is a show that teaches great lessons in friendship and the lessons taught are something everyone should listen to.
7. Parks and Recreation
Parks and Rec ,as the cool kids call it, has got to be one of my all time favorite comedies. It centers around the antics of a group of friends/co-workers at a parks and recreation department in the fictional city of Pawnee, Indiana. Each character in this show taught me a separate trait that I love and cherish. Except for Gary. Gosh Gary can't you do anything?
8. Broad City
Okay this one isn't on Netflix but it is pretty important to me. Broad City is me and my best friend if we lived in New York together. Now deciding who is who is difficult cause I see myself as both characters. Broad City has taught me so much but most importantly it taught me the most important phrase I will ever speak... "YASSS KWEEN"
Now these are just a few shows that have influenced me. I have so many more but if I listed them all you would be reading for as long as it would take you to binge all of the shows.
So let me know what you think of my list and feel free to let me know what shows inspire you.
