I have grown up listening to the Beatles, so I may be a little biased... but I honestly think they are one of the best bands to ever exist. They revolutionized music, especially rock 'n roll. They challenged other artists, like the Beach Boys, to try new things musically. They have inspired musicians, artists, mega-fans, and countless others. What's not to love?
So, I decided to attempt to make a list of the Beatles songs that I think are the best, and provide reasoning for them. I was originally going to put them in a specific order, but it turns out that I think they’re all the best in their own specific ways. So, enjoy what I would call my personal list of eight Beatles favorites.
1. "Something"
Best lyrics: “You're asking me will my love grow/ I don't know, I don't know/ You stick around now it may show.”
Reasoning: If I’m being 100 percent honest, this is my favorite Beatles song ever. This is partially because it was written my George Harrison, who was my favorite Beatle, and partially because it’s a REALLY good song. I would even call it one of the best love songs of all time.
2. "We Can Work It Out"
Best lyrics: “Life is very short, and there's no time/ For fussing and fighting, my friend.”
Reasoning: Growing up, this was my favorite Beatles song. The upbeat tone, the varying time count of the time, and the lyrics are all to die for. 10/10 would recommend.
3. "All My Loving"
Best lyrics: “I'll pretend that I'm kissing/The lips I am missing/And hope that my dreams will come true.”
Reasoning: This is another classic love song. However, it's upbeat enough to not sound mopey or too lovesick, which I greatly appreciate.
4. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Best lyrics: “I don't know why nobody told you/How to unfold your love/I don't know how someone controlled you/They bought and sold you.”
Reasoning: First things first, the instrumental of this song is TIMELESS. Secondly, the lyrics are deep and meaningful. You hear the emotion in every aspect of the song – from the instruments, the lyrics, and the band – a combination that is sure to make it a hit.
5. "A Day In The Life"
Best lyrics: The song tells a story, so you’ll just have to listen to it.
Reasoning: This song is a piece of art. It was written by Lennon and McCartney separately, which is why is has a mash-up feel to it. It shows a powerful level of creativity and innovation that I have yet to see in an artist since.
6. "Across The Universe"
Best lyrics: “Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind/Possessing and caressing me”
Reasoning: This songs is representative of the Beatles – unique, beautiful, and timeless.
7. "Hey Jude"
Best lyrics: “Don't carry the world upon your shoulders/ For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool/ By making his world a little colder”
Reasoning: This is a classic, of course… But it’s probably one of the only songs on this planet that I will listen to all 7-ish minutes of. The lyrics are wonderful, the melody is catchy, and the underlying lesson is beautiful.
8. "Eleanor Rigby"
Best lyrics: “All the lonely people/Where do they all come from?/All the lonely people/Where do they all belong?”
Reasoning: This was another of my favorites as a child. It is hauntingly beautiful and melancholy. It leaves you with more questions than answers, but it certainly makes you think…. And that’s one of the most powerful things a song can do.
Of course, this article is only long enough for me to mention a handful of songs that I love by the Beatles and there are countless more that I could have listed. But I hope you've enjoyed this list and if not then you should try actually listening to the songs.
