It's been said that the older you get, the wiser you get. Being a college student, I know that I'm young and therefore not very wise, but my grandparents have been around much longer so they are also much wiser. Through out my life, my grandparents have given me more advice than I will ever remember, but there are three things I've learned from them that I will never forget.
1. Don't take life too seriously
My grandparents are fun to be around because they don't take themselves too seriously. They are easy to joke with because you know they will laugh it off and joke back. My grandma says that nothing is worse than someone with no personality that can't take a joke and she's right. Our generation is too sensitive to jokes and gets offended too easily. It's time we take a step back and just laugh at ourselves.
2. Just be you
While everyone has heard this from their parents, uncles, aunts, teachers and just about every other person they've met, it's still important. My grandfather has drilled this message into my head. When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with magic. My grandfather used to help me tie "magic knots" that would disappear when I said the magic words. Later, I fell in love with cooking. My grandpa bought me a chefs jacket and we pretended that we were famous chefs on a cooking show. Since I've started writing for Odyssey, my grandpa has read all of my articles and showed them off to his friends. Through out every phase of my life, my grandpa has been there supporting me and encouraging me to do what I love.
3. Family comes first
My friends are an incredibly important part of my life. However, I know that some friends will come and go, but I'll always have my family. My grandparents have helped create a bond within my family that can never be broken. There is a huge emphasis on the importance of family time in my house. We eat dinner together almost every night and most nights we do something fun as a family after dinner. Eating dinner together allows us to catch up on what's happening in everyone's lives and playing cards after dinner creates memories that I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
I'm lucky to have grandparents as amazing as mine and who love me unconditionally. Their support and love has helped me become the person I am today. Their advice has helped me overcome obstacles and will continue to guide me for the rest of my life.
