To enjoy the little things is to fully enjoy life.
Recently, I have hit my rock bottom. This past month, I have been faced with obstacles that I was afraid I would not be able to overcome, and have gotten the short end of the stick nearly every time. I genuinely thought I couldn’t win in life. It was not until I was left alone in my bedroom feeling helpless, listening to my peers laughing and talking outside my window that I realized that it is not the monumental moments that make life so great, but the little things we see and feel nearly every day that we take for granted. One of the best feelings in the world to me, was knowing that I took a step in the right direction. A step towards the future where everything that I never thought was possible, slowly was becoming possible. I just needed to take this adventure and enjoy the little things along the way.
My first move was to take a step back and realize all of the things that naturally bring a smile to my face. Those are the things that make life so great, not getting 500 likes on an Instagram picture, or being more popular than the girl you passed on the street. Life is about the little things. It is about the moments we take for granted that we would never notice until they were gone.
So the next time you find yourself upset at life, try to remember the little things that make living so great.
1. Waking up to the sun shinning on your face.
2. Hot showers.
3. The first bite of a meal when you are really hungry.
4. Being hugged tightly.
5. Forehead kisses.
6. When your favorite song comes on the radio and you know every word to it.
7. Making someone smile.
8. Crawling into bed with warm clean sheets.
9. Making someone proud of you.
10. Finding the jeans that fit your body perfectly.
11. Falling asleep to the sound of rain.
12. Finding something you thought you lost.
13. Crossing things off your to-do list.
14. Singing in the shower.
15. Cold Chinese food.
16. Falling asleep on the beach.
17. The smell of freshly baked cookies.
18. Watching the sunset.
19. Walking around barefoot.
20. And knowing that everything works out in the end
That last one. The last one is important. Everything works out in the end. You can try to prove me wrong, but you won’t succeed. I know this because you’re still here, aren’t you? Life has never failed you thus far, and I know that it won’t in the future. The world is a crazy place though, filled with tragedy, disease, and negativity. As a whole, we focus more on the bad than on the good, which is why we are prone to feeling down about ourselves and others. The little things though are the things that will pull you through. From failing a test to losing a friend, the little things will never fail to make you smile.
