“So with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
Cruz terrified me in every aspect. I cringed every time I saw he received delegates. The fact that I’m satisfied with Trump as our Republican primary nominee because the alternative was far worse says a lot. Everyone talks about Trump because, well, he’s Donald Trump. He’s a businessman and potentially the 45th President of the United States. I would not call myself a Trump supporter in the slightest, but in comparison to Cruz...he seems almost moderate. Personally, I don’t believe he poses as much as of a threat as Ted Cruz.
The positions Cruz held on individual rights should be reason enough to be ecstatic about him dropping out from the upcoming election. For starters, he’s not comfortable with same-sex marriage. What did he intend to do? Revoke the law that legalizes marriage? Was the plan completely to regress in terms of social justice? Given Trump doesn’t seem entirely satisfied with same sex marriage either but in comparison, seems to be more accepting.
Generally speaking, he doesn’t believe in affirmative action, that’s not so much the issue as much as when he said that underrepresented groups shouldn’t receive assistance. I’m not even going to discuss his economic issues, but in essence, this man seems to love privatization in every sense of the word.
His stance on domestic issues, more specifically education, frightened me. The debate should be how much state funding should be given to public schools including higher education. He promoted state-funded vouchers to run private institutions. Way to give an effective solution to the fact that SUNY schools alone don’t receive enough funding.
Please, let’s focus on private school funding for the low-income students to attain a private education rather than improving our public schools to accommodate the majority of students. It’s surprising to see that he advocates for equal opportunity for students to decide between private and public education yet doesn’t support social justice for minorities.
He believes that Christian values are equivalent to American values. No wonder he doesn’t believe in separation of church and state. Apparently, it’s a radical idea that everyone might not believe in the same religion. Everyone seems fearful about Trump’s candidacy yet Cruz supported almost everything Trump does but took it a step further. While Trump wants to prevent illegal immigration--in considerable radical ways, Cruz opposes legal immigration. No wonder a noticeably diverse Bronx student population planned on a walkout in light of his visit a couple weeks ago. America is a country made up of immigrants, we feed off diversity.
Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate a week ago. Voters thought that this served as a strategic move to gain supporters, now with only a few primaries left he dropped out. Not that Cruz had this great potential to prevent Trump from receiving the remaining number of delegates but we didn’t expect him to let his opponent walk into the primaries.
Everyone's fearful about Trump’s candidacy yet Cruz supports almost everything Trump does but seems to go a step further. I understand Trump has similar views, but if we compare the two candidates, the Republican Party is clearly in better hands.
