The Struggles Of Dead Week

When did it sneak up on us?

The Struggles Of Dead Week
Joe Ybarra

We were having the time of our lives and didn’t have a care in the world… until dead week crept up on us... Like it always does, dead week has taken all of us by surprise. Now that our worlds are burning, and we are scrambling to get things done, there are a few things that we will miss as we head into finals week.

Nap time.

Long passed are the two to three-hour naps in the afternoon. If you try to take one now, chances are that you are setting yourself up for long nights. Give your pillow a hug. I’m sure it’s crying. Console it. Tell it that it won’t be long before you’re reunited in the afternoons… unless you have to work a summer job...

Commons' cash.

You probably spent all your commons' cash in the first couple of months of the semester. What does that mean? You are stuck either eating the dining hall food or you are going to have to tap into your reserve of Ramen noodles. While you’re enjoying your Ramen meal, one of your friends is probably buying a box of Burger King’s chocolate pies with the commons' cash they’ve saved up all semester. Don’t judge them. It’s going to be a long finals week. If you’re nice, maybe they’ll give you a pie… maybe…

The outdoors.

Once dead week hits, everyone retreats to their rooms, the library or the practice rooms. They’ll either be studying, trying to watch Netflix without guilt or shame or attempting to catch up on a couple months’ worth of work. Needless to say, some people will forget what the sun looks like. Don’t fall into this trap. Take a walk and try to get away from your work for at least half an hour.

Late night adventures.

Days without naps will begin to take their toll. Although you will try to stay up so you can hang out with your friends, chances are that as soon as 10 p.m. hits, you will be knocked out. Next thing you know, you are missing out on all the adventures. Remember that awesome thing that happened last night? Oh yeah, I forgot, you were in bed asleep at that time.

Hanging out with friends.

Do you remember having fun? Do you remember talking with people that you are close to? The bad thing about study week is that while you are rushing to get things done, so are your friends. The good news is that once everything is said and done, you can celebrate! Treat yourself. You know you deserve it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
