Don’t get me wrong…I absolutely loved being at home with my family this summer. There is something about being home that is just so comforting, and my family is incredible. However, there are obvious differences between being at home and being away at college. Here are some things that have been hard for me about coming home.
1. Everyone goes to bed before midnight.
My family goes to bed shortly after 11 p.m. most nights, so it would be unusual for me to stay up too much later. I’m used to staying up until at least 2 a.m. with my friends in the dorms, so this was definitely an adjustment.
2. Everything shuts down pretty early.
Recently, my town just got this really awesome outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and a movie theater. After walking out of the movies at midnight, my friend and I realized that everyone was leaving the bar at midnight...so basically the most exciting place we could go at that time was Waffle House. Now that’s just depressing!
3. Parents are always wondering where I am.
I never told my parents when I left my college campus, so it's weird being home because now, when I leave the house, they like to know where I’m going, who I'm with, what we're doing and what time I'll be home.
4. Actually having to make plans.
Walking down the hall and asking people to hang out is so much easier than texting to find a time that works for your friends.
5. Running into people I don’t want to see anymore.
High school is over. I never signed up to run into that mean girl from math class, but here we are...
6. Not living with people my own age.
Always being with people your own age is so much fun. There’s something exciting going on all the time! Adapting to living with parents and siblings again can be challenging.
7. Missing my best friends.
Not being with people that I’ve lived with for nine months is sad. It’s not always easy to see each other when we live several states away.
8. Not all of my hometown friends are home.
Some people are taking summer classes, studying abroad, etc. It’s hard not having everyone in one place at one time.
9.No parties (or at least parties worth going to).
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory.
I can’t wait to be back at Furman in a few weeks! Roll Dins!
