Business majors are not easy, but are extremely rewarding. Choosing to major in finance was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Us business majors have high expectations, and are intelligent. We are going to be successful in life. Until then we have to study all night, wear our business formal clothes to class, and perfect the art of networking and handshaking. Even though business majors are fantastic, we face a lot of daily struggles.
1. Everyone assumes that you want to own a business.
Every time I tell someone that my major is finance the response I usually get is “Do you want to own a business?” No I don’t! To be honest, that is the last thing I would want to do. Just because finance is my major, doesn’t mean I want a business. Business majors can do a lot more than just own a business.
2. You love dressing up more than anyone else in your friend group.
Honestly, whenever a professor says we have to dress business formal to class, or for a presentation, I feel a burst of excitement in me. What’s not to love about a sophisticated pant suit and heels?
3. Group projects!!!!
In any business course you take, guaranteed you are going to do at least one group project. In every group project there’s the person that does everything, the person that doesn’t even know what the project is on, the person that can’t make it to any meetings, and the person that doesn’t show up to class. Group projects are either hit or miss; they either work really well or just become torturous.
4. Your brain begins to work in a different way.
Whenever I see people wasting their money foolishly I lecture them, because finance made me understand the value and importance of money. I budget a lot better now, and even invest in stocks. Whenever I hear my friend’s car loan interest rates I cringe. The word “loan" itself petrifies me. I can’t even watch a commercial without analyzing the company’s strategies. Who’s their target audience? What marketing strategies do my favorite stores use?
5. Your friends (usually STEM majors) and family think that you picked an easy major.
I’m here to tell you guys business majors are not easy. Have you ever taken the complex and INSANELY hard accounting, economics, and finance courses? If not, please refrain from belittling me by saying I have no reason to be stressed. I work two jobs, try to have a social life, try to be involved on campus, and maintain a high GPA, yet people tell me my major is easy.
6. Not knowing what you’re doing but managing to pull through.
Microeconomics was the hardest business course I’ve ever taken, and I still don’t understand cost curves and demand graphs, but I managed to get a B+ in the class. If you try to succeed, you will succeed!
