So, I just got a new pair of glasses and it made me think about the struggles that come with not having 20/20 vision. If someone is not trying to wear my glasses as soon as I take them off, there is someone in my ear telling me to wear my contacts. Those are just two of the many problems that come with wearing glasses.
1. That Damn Smudge!
Perfect vision is already
a difficult task when the glasses are off, so it is even more frustrating when
that spot of rain or steam covers the lenses while they are on. The eye is
forced to have a staring contest with it and the smudge automatically wins
unless there is a proper lens cleaning cloth on hand. But without one your go
to option is the shirt.
If you have a wipe T-shirt by a company like fift, which is designed to clean glasses without damaging them, there is hope for clear vision again (#not sponsored)
The wrong T-shirt could mean scratches for days.
2. Getting New Glasses
Now, this does not sound
like a bad thing because getting new glasses is like getting a fresh new pair
of eyes. The negative, disappointing aspect of it starts when a couple of weeks
go by. The world starts to look basic again no matter how shiny the lenses are.
3. Those 20/20 Vision People Trying on Your Glasses and Diagnosing You As "Blind"
Fortunately for those
people, it is a myth that their eyes will be damaged by wearing glasses when
they do not need them. However, it is ridiculous and unnecessary to remind
someone as to why they are wearing glasses. The statement, “you are really
blind,” is not only an exaggeration since actual blindness cannot be cured by
wearing prescription glasses, it is most importantly annoying.
4. Breaking the arms(temples)
Cracked lenses are worse,
but once those temples break you have to instantly become an operator to
reunite them with the glasses. Unless you are one of those people who always
have a backup pair, the main tool to fixing the temples is tape. Or if you are
super self-conscious that someone will notice the tape on the side, there is
super glue. Although it is annoying, a big part of you is grateful the lenses are in good condition.
5. The Pressure to be Able to See Everything Because You Have Glasses
Have you ever been with that friend who low-key has impaired vision but refuses to get glasses or even contacts? So, if they cannot see something clearly, they ask you since you have glasses and when you cannot tell them what it is, they make you feel like you let the whole team down. Ignore them because their probably battling the denial of their lack of vision and they are just taking it out on you.
6. "How Many Fingers Am I Holding up?"
If someone is asking you
this and they are not an eye doctor, you are not obligated to answer this
question; especially if you are near-sighted and they are two blocks away. Unless
they are paying your bills, pay their personalized eye exam no mind.
7. Broken Case
There
is really no warning when this happens. One day your glasses will be tucked in
the case, then another day the stubborn case will not close or the screws come
undone. Your glasses can always be left out in the open at night, but that will
not guarantee their safety.
8. Falling Asleep with Them on
Since
they are not contacts, wearing glasses to sleep will not dry out your eyes or
affect your vision once you wake up. However, they can feel like a barrier
between your face and the pillow especially if their arms are thick. Taking
them off is the obvious solution, but sleep sometimes comes first. It is even
worse in a car or a bus when you want to lay your head down on the door.
Sleeping with your head upward is not socially acceptable, so you either stay
awake or risk getting scratches.
On that note, it is true that wearing glasses can be a pain, but at the end of the day, you have to admit, you simply love them. And when you love something, you stay committed through thick and thin....
lenses.
I'll stop now.
