For years and years, African American girls and women have been told that relaxed hair is the best way. Straight hair is easier to manage, and looks more "appropriate." Well its 2016, and black girls said "F straight hair." Black women are tired of society trying conform them into this little box, and trying to have more of a European look. Black women are black for a reason, they have their own culture, and hair type.
Having natural hair is a lot different from having relaxed hair. If you are not aware, a relaxer is a very strong chemical that one puts on their scalp and roots for a certain amount of time, so that once it is washed out and straightened, the hair will be straight and soft. This all sounds nice and dandy, but after a long period of time, without proper care this chemical will leave scabs in your hair, cause it to break off, thin out, and can leave bald spots.
The alternative of this product is throwing it away and going natural. Going natural means there is no relaxer in your hair, and your hair is in its natural texture. One can either transition from a relaxer to natural hair by just letting your hair grow out of the relaxer and slowly cutting the ends every couple months, and one can do the big chop, and cut off all relaxed ends. Most women like to transition, so they can maintain length. Others are tired of dealing with the two different textures and would rather just cut the remaining hair off. A lot of Black women also wear protective styles, such as weaves, wigs, and braids, and this is a way for the hair underneath to grow faster and easier.
Natural hair is beautiful, its healthy, versatile, and gets noticed by any race. Kinky or curly hair is apart of black culture, not just women. Black men have been letting their hair grow out recently, by dredding it, twisting, or just rocking an afro. Whether it's kinky or curly, you should embrace it, and love the hair in its natural form.
