The Strugges Of The Transition From College To Summer

Everyone knows the worst part about college is the actual academics. Who would’ve thought it would be so hard after high school? So, you would assume leaving behind academics and moving into summer mode would be easy breezy CoverGirl, wrong. A lot changes when you go back home after college, here are 11 things that will leave everyone in for a rude awakening!

1. Not being able to come home whenever you want

No more stumbling in at 3am at home! And no matter how quiet you are you will get caught. You’re looking to be screamed at for it that night, the next morning, the following week…

2. Not being able to sleep till whenever you want

Sleeping until 2pm will no longer be an option. Even if you are lucky enough to have parents that wont pull you out of bed at 9am, it is almost impossible to sleep late with your whole family yelling and moving around the house

3. Going from having prepared meals at your beck and call, to having to cook for yourself

This has got to be one of the worst. Yes, the dining hall food is terrible, but at least it is prepared for whenever you want it. At home you have to actually make things yourself and have limited options depending on your Mom’s grocery shopping skills

4. Having to work

If you’re like me and never work during the school year with hopes that you can make that summer money stretch till the end of the year, then you’re in for quite a surprise when you get home. You will find yourself competing to the death with other college students to get a job in the first place, and then you have to give up majority of your summer to work. Ugh, tragic.

5. The severe lack of nightlife going on at home

Going home and partying a lot with home friends will fade after a week or two, and hanging out in someone’s basement or spending all your money at the bar will get old real quick. You will soon miss those disgusting frat parties or nickel.

6. Missing your college friends

Most people love going home to their home friends during December break, but are you ready to spend four months with them? You lived with your college friends, you will miss their presence 24/7.

7. Paying for things

Summer=spending. There is no denying that. Whether it is gas or all the fun stuff you have planned for the summer, that costs money and most parents aren’t going to dish it out as easily as they would with you at school.

8. Having to look semi-presentable again

Rolling out of bed and sleepwalking to your class was so acceptable at college, now you have to listen to your Mom tell you to do things like “brush your hair” or “do your laundry at least once a week”.

9. Chores

Coming home means, “doing your part”. Which includes all the terrible chores that you left behind for your siblings to deal with it.

10. Your family is no longer excited to see you

Cherish these final few weeks of your family's excitement to see you. Especially that $20 your dad slips you when you leave, because its all over once you're back.

11. Realizing you’re another year closer to graduating and have to become a real adult

Finishing up one year means you are getting older and one year closer to what seems like one big party, ending. Graduating from the best four years of your life, or more for you super seniors, and having to step into the real world.

Everyone loves summer, but once it starts those feelings of missing school come back. You may realize that having to do a little academic work is more than worth it to stay at school!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
