Junior year of high school was one of the best years in high school for a lot of people. You were at the “idgaf” point in high school and ready to go to college and live your dreams with no parental supervision. Junior year of college, on the other hand, is the point in college where we realize we are getting way too old. Bring out the rockers, am I right? From stressing about school to jobs to balancing an active social life, junior year is the year that really tests whether you are ready to be an adult or not.
This is the year that many of us are officially in our majors. Taking classes we chose to be in and thought that we would enjoy it. Keyword, THOUGHT. During the past two years, did you ever have an upperclassman come up to you and tell you that it is ok if you hate the classes that you are in now, because once you are in your major, you will love your classes? Well, I’m still waiting for that magical moment to happen. It is not much easier, and it is definitely not fun yet.
Now one of the scariest things about junior year is that we are less than two years away from graduating college. TWO! Do you remember how fast our high school junior and senior year went by? We have two years to mature and officially be adults. It’s funny how we procrastinated on being adults until now--- alright, it’s not that funny. The reality check really hits when you see your friends at career fairs on campus dressed up in business professional apparel looking for a big kid job. This is the year that we start thinking about our future and what kind of occupation we want for the rest of our lives. Hey, no pressure.
Apart from the school work and job searches, the social scene seems a little different compared to the past two years. Instead of looking forward to a weekend of partying, we start to look forward to weekends because it means sleeping in and relaxing. We knew being 20-21 years old means the downfall of our lives. The thought of going out on a Thursday no longer seems interesting nor is fun anymore, going out is now considered a hassle instead of something enjoyable. Huge crowded frat party versus small get together? I will let you answer that question.
Junior year is also a year where we start to look deep into ourselves, and I mean really deep. We start to see things about ourselves that we never really realized. Instead of the materialistic “trying to impress my friends” self, we start to look at our inner “I like being alone on Sundays and ponder on life” self. We start to enjoy traveling in a different sense. Instead of wanting to go on vacations to get drunk or party, we start to appreciate the beauty of places that exist around us.
Who knew this day would come so soon. We are officially old and irrelevant in a sense. However, this is also the year we start the new chapter of our adulthood.
