Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old boy that attended a Texas high school, was arrested and suspended from his school on Monday, Sept. 17, 2015. The reason for this? He brought a clock that he had been building and assembling himself and wanted to show his teacher the project and all the progress he made on it. Administration thought this was a homemade bomb and that is how it all happened.
The world is outraged. He was racially stereotyped and had to suffer being taken out of school in handcuffs and going through that whole process. The charges were dropped because it was made very evident that it was indeed just a clock. He has seen a tremendous amount of support and outreach from people all over the nation and some of his supporters are some big names that we all know. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook posted a status to his page stating this "Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed." and he also invited him to come visit him at the Facebook headquarters.
If this 14-year-old boy is that ambitious and handy at a young age, it certainly should be praised and encouraged so that he will continue pursuing building more and more extravagant and difficult things. Twitter actually posted a tweet stating that they love building things too and offered Ahmed an internship with them. The CEO of Autodesk reached out to Ahmed as well and told hm to not let this stop his creativity.
Ahmed was also invited to visit the White House! President Obama told him to bring his clock with him and that "We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great." The STEM field is something that all kids should be encouraged to pursue, and when a teenager shows a genuine interest in it, we need to keep them encouraged and pursuing that path in life. Like Obama said, science is what makes America great. The kids are the future, and with Ahmed Mohamed being able to build his own clock at just the age of 14, he is going to do and build great things for America.
We should all stand with Ahmed. He is a young man that was wrongly accused of something terrible. All he did was build a clock and wanted to show his teacher his hard work so that he could be praised (like he should've been) and possibly get some feedback on what he could do differently to make it better. Thankfully, all charges were dropped and the nation is coming together to show him all the support he deserves. He has so many opportunities to visit these big companies from Twitter to Foursquare so they can help him to continue his creativity and convince him to not give up after this incident.
