Good news: The Franklin Institute will be showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX, and tickets are on sale NOW.
Even better news: Maybe, just maybe, there will be a prominent female Jedi or Sith Lord in this one. The new cast disappointed some people, as the principle cast additions feature six males and one female. But here's why I'm optimistic: the film has a wealth of amazing female actresses confirmed, including Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Christina Chong, Jessica Henwick and more; the very fact that there are more females being introduced to a male dominated universe is exciting and shows progress in the film industry - and surely one of them will be able to hold a lightsaber.
Don't get me wrong, watching Princess Leia in action rocked. Leia is an amazing character with great background, development and has a huge role in the plot. But she was the only female in the original trilogy who rocked. Another female character not as prominent as Leia but important in her own right is Padme; however in the prequel, Padme basically dies because she loses her man - oh, I'm sorry, it was because of "a broken heart" and because she "lost the will to live."
The original trilogy fails the Bechdel test, a simple screen for movies in which the only requirement to pass is if two females can talk to each other about something other than a man. This is probably because the entire empire is male. Return of the Jedi was supposed to have women in battle scenes, but all female actresses were eventually all replaced by male counterparts in the film post-production.The prequels, on the other hand, include a few more females who will sometimes discuss other topics aside from their male counterparts. This change in the movies reflects the Star Wars Expanded Universe more closely than the original trilogy, and perhaps also reflects Hollywood's changing views on women as leads.
Look, I understand that Star Wars is fiction. I understand that people love Star Wars not because of any sort of politically correct message but because as a kid, there was nothing cooler and even as you grow up, its creative plot, epic adventures, and colorful characters stay with you. But I'm not asking for much; all I really want is just one female lead who can hold her own during battle scenes for future generations of young female Star Wars fans to look up to and believe that when they battle their brothers with plastic lightsabers in the living room, maybe they can win.
