This summer I am spending my time in Mentone, Alabama, as a summer camp counselor at Riverview Camp for Girls. While camp life can be tough and tiring, it is my (and all of the other staff's) good fortune to have nights off during camp. Now, Mentone, Alabama is not the most happening place, in fact, there is very little around except summer camps. But, just 15 or so minutes away is Fort Payne, which is still small, but thankfully bigger than Mentone. And if you go to downtown Fort Payne, you will be greeted with an adorable road that has an old theater, a book shop, antique stores, restaurants and much more. Now, if you ask any of my friends what I am obsessed with, they could say a number of things, but it is likely that they will say coffee. So it is not a surprise that I would go looking for a local coffee shop of some sort. Thankfully, Fort Payne did not disappoint. On the corner of Gault Avenue is The Spot.
The Spot is an eclectic coffee shop, offering an urban feel in a small town. The mood is calm and fun, going along with the modern Gothic feel of the place. Art covers the walls, and you can sit at tables or booths or on old plush couches. The music is calm and eclectic, and there is even a piano available for customers to play. Different levels sectioned off allows areas for groups to go off and talk, all while enjoying fantastic coffee and food.
Much like the atmosphere, the food and coffee at The Spot do not disappoint. Some favorites of other customers are the BBQ sandwich, the turkey bacon sandwich and the black bean veggie sandwich. When it comes to coffee, the spot has a wide selection of both hot and cold options ranging from espressos to something called a freeze. My favorite so far has been the Java Chip Freeze, which is absolutely delicious. Overall, I have enjoyed my nights off at The Spot and I know that I will be heading there on many more occasions. Hopefully, one of my nights off will fall on a night when a local music group heads that way.
So, if you happen to be driving to Chattanooga or anywhere else that takes you through the Fort Payne area, I encourage you to take a little detour and hit up Fort Payne's downtown and stop in for some coffee and food at The Spot.
