You and the boy you dated in high school, or even for a few months in college, are no longer together.
One day, you're in your car with the windows down, or possibly relaxing in your room, and you hear that song. The song which reminds you of him. It could be the song you chose to be "your" song while dating, a song that has always reminded you of him, or a song you guys used to jam out to while in the car together. It could be one specific song, or there could be more than one (for me, the entire Taylor Swift and Miley collection). Whatever it may be, it is a song that brings back a million emotions, all rushing through your veins. Good, bad, and intense feelings. Your heart probably feels as if it is going to beat right through your chest, and the only thing you can do is cry.
All the memories come back to you. All the dates, joyous laughter, and many more experiences fill your head and heart with positive feelings for a moment. You reminisce on all the great times. You might analyze every aspect of your relationship and blame yourself for what happened. You may even think that you want him back in your life. But he is just another guy, just like that was just another song. You listen to hundreds of songs which don't remind you of him every day, so why let one song get you down?
I am here to tell you that those feelings are short, just like the song. In 15 minutes, you won't be able to recite all of its lyrics. In 15 minutes, something else will cross your mind, and you will completely forget that you thought about him in the first place.
Its okay to think about him, but only for a short amount of time. Its okay to bawl your eyes out while listening to "your" song alone in your car, but only momentarily. The world may feel like it is ending, but this is just for a moment. I promise you that everyone does it (myself included). This rush of feelings is only temporary, and it only deserves your attention for a few minutes.
That song may always hold a special place in your heart and bring your mind running straight to him, but do not let it consume you, because it is temporary. Just like him.
Move on. Move on as the song changes. He moved on, and so should you.
