I have a feeling that many of you will relate to this one. Many of us in college have a large group of friends or just multiple little groups whom we connect with. What comes with friend groups is friends' boyfriends. Most of the time the 'boyfriends' almost become a part of your inner circle; so you get to know them well, sometimes too well.
For me, I have gotten the pleasure to be front row and watch these relationships grow or disintegrate into a pile of unwanted sweatshirts and photos tossed in the trash. I am going to tell you all the benefits to being the single friend and how it will help you in the long-run.
First of all you get to learn the ins and outs of a relationship. Then when you actually do catch someone's eye, you will be a freaking love guru because of all your knowledge about what it takes to be the 'perfect' girlfriend.
But, I would have to say the best benefit of not having a boyfriend is being surrounded by your friend's significant other is third wheeling. Not only will you get to accompany them on many dates where you have to fork over the last of your cash, while your friend doesn't even have to bring her wallet, but also become an expert at taking couple pictures. You may even start contemplating if you should drop out of college and just start photographing couple and wedding photos, then go home to your nine cats and your recorded episodes on DVR.
Another great benefit of being the single one of the group is learning how to be on your own. Those lonely nights of watching Gossip Girl over and over while all your roommates have gone to bae's probably didn't seem like a lesson learned at the moment, but when you make it big and move to a big city on your own, lonely won't even be in your vocabulary. Especially if you start early on that family of cats.
No boyfriend also gives you more time for activities to better yourself. Instead of having to take time out of your day to hang out with them, you can pick up some new hobbies to occupy your day. For example, you could learn how to knit tiny little sweaters for your future cats. Or you could enhance your skills in carpentry and build little carpeted towers for your cats to play on. See look, you have so many options!
Though it can sometimes be overwhelming in college to watch all your friends be in happy relationships, being single is not all that bad. Your Prince Charming will show up at some point, it just might not be right now. So go out and be yourself. Take lots pictures of all the memories you make by yourself because your phone won't be out of battery from texting your 'boyfriend' all day!
