Driving down highway interstate 15 heading south leaving Las Vegas, you’ll start to read signs saying “Seven Magic Mountains.”
These seven towering boulders were created by Ugo Rondinone, a Swiss-born New York native.
If you don’t realize the size during the drive, east of the highway you will glance seven boulders with different chromaticity, from afar.
The seven rock-towers are 30 to 35 feet high with day-glow paints. The Seven Magic Mountains were locally sourced limestone boulders stacked vertically in groups ranging between three to six.
The colors are with vivid pinks, deep blues, glaring greens, sharp silver, black and alluring yellow-orange.These colors are patterned on each totem, distinctively colorized in its own way.
These magic mountains can’t be difficult to see, due to how dwarf the desert surroundings are.
The location of this geographic presentation is on the Jean Dry Lake, approximately 10 miles from Las Vegas Blvd and St. Rose Parkway in Henderson, NV.
According to the Seven Magic Mountains website, Rondinone stated “The location is physically and symbolically mid-way between the natural and the artificial: the natural is expressed by the mountain ranges, deserts, and the Jean Dry Lake backdrop and the artificial is expressed by the highway and constant flow of traffic between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.”
Rondinone wanted to continue the land art at Jean Lake, which started in the 1960s.The works pay homage to the history of land art.
According to the information kiosk at the site, Rondinone had a long interest in natural phenomena and their reformulation in art.The inspiration came from the balance rock formations, stacks that defy gravity, displaying teetering formations that stay equal.
