The Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced the release date of their new album, "The Getaway." This is the funk-rock band's eleventh studio album and is set to release on June 17, 2016.
This upcoming album will be the first album since the 1989 "Mother's Milk" not to be produced by Rick Rubin. The new producer is Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse. Along with a new producer, the band's album mixed by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.
"The Getaway" is the follow-up album to 2011's "I'm With You" LP. This is the second album which features the newly obtained guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer.
Although comparisons are not always fair, lets compare Klinghoffer to the former guitarist of the Chili Peppers, John Frusciante. Frusciante's first album with the band was the previously mentioned "Mother's Milk" album. In his second album appearance, he created the masterpiece of "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," which is arguably the greatest Chili Pepper album...period. As for Klinghoffer, he had huge shoes to fill when Frusciante left the band. However, Klinghoffer showed no hesitation in his replacement role, offering great guitar playing in "I'm With You." I'm interested to see how Klinghoffer performs in his second album; however, I'm not expecting him to create a masterpiece like BSSM.
Along with the release of the album title and release date, the band also released the album's first single, "Dark Necessities." The Chili Peppers announced through their social media pages on May 2, 2016, that the single would be released May 5.
When I heard of the single being released, I felt like the fifth could not get fast enough. I was so excited to hear the new direction of the band. After hearing "Dark Necessities," I was so glad to hear the band evolving into this new genre, while also maintaing their original funkiness. The song begins with a buildup of soft piano and chords, unlike any other Chili Pepper song. However, when you get the full blast of Flea's slap bass you know they haven't missed a step after all these years. The five-minute single is an excellent sample into the band's new direction.
