From a young age I have always dreamed of college as being a beautiful
social arena in which everyone would get to become best friends with one
another and meet their soul mates. Looking back on it now, I probably
should’ve added a unicorn in there to keep the theme of fairy tales
going. The truth is, college isn’t anything like that. Don’t get me
wrong, there are social gatherings and you do get to meet a lot of
people, some of which you date; but it is nothing like I imagined it would be.
What kind of lie would I live in if I didn't agree with this comic?
Expectation #1: Everyone you meet will automatically be your friend.
Reality: The chances of you seeing that person who waved at you the first day of orientation are less than 1%.
Expectation #2: Your best friend from freshman year in high school will continue being your best friend through college.
Reality: There are so many people to meet that the possibility of you sticking with them are about as slim as a piece of paper.
Expectation #3: You don’t need to study to pass a test.
Reality: If you want to pass the class, you better start opening your textbook more than just once a quarter.
Expectation #4: You will get a solid 8 hours of sleep during the weeknights and you will always be ready to do homework.
Reality: … no.
I’m not saying that college is a terrible place, because it isn’t -- but it is hard. You will get stressed, and there will be nights where you will be tempted to just pack your bags and go home. But there will also be those days that you wish would last forever. Whether it be because you got to play “hide-and-go-seek” in Walmart at midnight or because that cute boy from your 9 o’clock class finally talked to you. Whatever it is, just know that there is a reason that you are here. Figure that out and have some fun while doing it.
