We all can agree that the weather lately has been crazy. Temperatures and rain are at an all-time high. When it is not raining, the temperature is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. We all stop to ask these questions: “Winter, where are you? Why is the weather like this? Why is mother nature like this?” As a resident of the state of Georgia, you will experience every type of weather within a week or less. If you are tired of how the weather has been lately and want to know what you can do about it, you have plenty of solutions to solve this problem. The main question is, “Can your changes to fight climate change have a positive effect on others?"
I was watching "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" and they were discussing the climate change debate. While watching it, I learned an important fact about humans and climate change. Some humans do not take the issue of global warming seriously. According to research, one in four Americans are skeptical of climate change and believe that this issue is exaggerated. The issue of climate change is not a debatable issue. A lot of people know that the climate is changing at an odd and irregular time and is not healthy for the environment. People also realize that climate change has an effect on us today. The question they want to know is, “Can we do something to stop these changes?”
One of the most important things we can do as people is vote for lawmakers who believe in climate change. Sen. Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to fight against climate change and prove that it is real. Unfortunately, 72 percent of the Senate (39 senators) rejected the bill because of the denial of climate change. Most of the people who denied climate change were veteran lawmakers. One notable veteran lawmaker is Oklahoma representative James Inhofe, who is the incoming chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW)(Schulman). For major economic and climate change, we as legal citizens need to vote for lawmakers who believe in climate change. We have to vote for these local, state and federal government officials who believe that action should be took to fight climate change.
Another important way we can fight climate change is by eating fresh and local foods. Eating fresh and local foods that are in season will reduce the amount of carbon from your food. It is not only good for the environment, it is healthier for you.
Replacing your light bulbs with CFL or LED light bulbs is another good way to conserve energy and help the fight against climate change. By replacing at least one, a 60 watt incandescent light bulb with an LED bulb used four hours a day can yield $14.00 in savings annually. CFL and LED light bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs.
Reducing, reusing and recycling products can help the environment. You can reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Get a reusable water bottle, for example. Recycle paper, glass and aluminum cans, newspapers and plastic. If there is not a recycling spot in your workplace or school, ask about starting one. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
An essential key to fulfilling the goal of fighting climate change is encouraging others to conserve. By telling our friends, family, peers, neighbors and co-workers to conserve energy, we can create opportunities for the establishment of programs and policies that are beneficial for the environment.
These are few important things that we can do to fight climate change. It is an issue that is slowly becoming worse as time goes on. Through research, knowledge, teamwork and action, we will be able to live in a healthier and better environment.
