Being a senior in college isn't all fun and games. I mean it mostly is, but there are still a few challenging classes left to take. One class I'm taking is the History of the English Language, or better known on the Springfield College campus as "HEL." Our first class dealt with words and slang terms used in modern day vocabulary and while I was thinking about how much I hate the use of the word "bae" or hearing people say they're getting "turnt," I realized I don't understand the idea behind calling someone "basic."
Just the other day, actually, someone called me basic because my phone case has a wine glass on it where the "wine" moves around. Why does having that as a phone case make me "basic?" And why is being "basic" a bad thing? I mean who cares if I'm simple and like things that the majority of people like. Why is there a need to take a word with what seems to have a very harmless meaning and turn it into such a negative thing? Being "basic" shouldn't be a bad thing.
The English language can be a very beautiful thing. Seeing how it has evolved over the centuries is really interesting. But now we turn simple words like "basic" into a demeaning word to call someone who enjoys similar things to many other people and it turns the English language into quite an ugly one. I mean literally just hearing someone say that they're "turning up" drops a persons IQ. If you want to tell someone you're getting inebriated then just say that, don't add these silly little slang terms that actually make you sound dumber.
So that leads me to my point: Why call someone basic? You have every right to agree or disagree with something someone chooses to do, but why call someone basic because they like the color pink, or in my instance have a wine glass phone case? It actually doesn't even make sense. So I'm going to shame the word basic until it is no longer a term used by people to put down other people, because that's just stupid. I personally don't see being basic as a bad thing and I don't know why people use it the way they do but all of us basic b*****s should stick together. We should turn being "basic" into a good thing until the term fades out of our vocabulary and in a few years and is replaced by something probably much dumber.
