To begin this article, I just want to reiterate to the readers that I am not inherently against socialism. While I am a libertarian within my political viewpoints, as both a political theory and as an idea to aspire to within a society or country I think that socialism has its merits and can give people a goal to achieve when it comes to finding the best way to live. That being said I do have some concerns on socialism as a whole, especially when it comes to implement these policies and theories within the United States.
This topic came to mind with the rise of Bernie Sanders within the primaries for President of the United States, which still show Sanders in quite the close race with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. One of my biggest concerns with people and politicians talking about socialism policies and trying to enact them within the United States is that the size of America just doesn't lend itself toward being able to enact these socialism programs effectively. When people talk about country with working socialism programs they bring up Denmark, Norway, France, and Canada which all work for the size of those countries (Denmark being the smallest with 5 million people and France being the biggest with 66 million) but the United States boasts a population of over 318 million people more than four times the population of France. This population discrepancy leads it to an inability of the United States to share the same core agreements between its citizens to lean towards a socialist driven government. With Socialist program you also need to not only have a majority of the population that agrees to enact the policies within the government but to have a monetary base from the population to help make the programs able to function within the government. This becomes especially difficult within the United States do to the various different cultures, personalities, and political viewpoints which makes a single unified voice an impossibility to create within America.
Another problem with socialism within America can be seen in the picture above. The basis of this picture is showing all of the different socialist policies and programs that are present within the United States. The main problem with this picture though is that the majority of programs that are present on this list are not actually socialist programs, they are just programs that the government is meant to start and maintain like NASA, the DOT, or Public Landfills. This goes to the main problem which is that many people don't actually know what the difference is between a socialist program and a program that is suppose to be put on by the government and are just the general governmental programs that emerge from a national government. Being able to make this distinction between actual socialism and assumed socialism is important for not only people that are arguing against socialism, but is also an important distinction for people to make who are arguing for socialism in America as propaganda like this can spread the wrong message to people that are already confused about the political system and various political theories that are present in the United States.
For socialism in America the main thing of importance is that the people know that there is a difference between socialist programs and socialism and just programs or departments that are necessary or simply apart of the government's responsibilities to the people. For more information about socialism and to hear it from someone who knows what they are talking, surrounded by three people that kind of do, I encourage to check out the video at the bottom by the group Kinda Funny where they talk about socialism.
