As a millennial , I follow all the trends on social media. The crying Michael Jordan face, the cats with cucumber videos and of course, all the memes comparing Donald Trump’s hair to some ridiculous object.
While all of these can be hilarious, there is one trend I cannot laugh at, and this is the idea of side chicks.
I first heard of this term a few years ago. When I learned what it meant, I was shocked. According to Urban Dictionary, a side chick is defined as "the other woman; also known as the mistress; a female that is neither a male's wife or girlfriend who has relations with the male while he is in another relationship."
To me, the only funny part about this idea is how ridiculous it is. When typing “side chick” into Google, Wikipedia even gives you steps on how to be the perfect side chick, which you can see here.
The idea is to be the girl on the side. The girl that he messes around with. The one that he goes to for hookups and then goes right back to his “main,” or actual girlfriend.
The worst part about the side chick idea is that it’s supposed to be kept secret. The “main” should have no idea that her boyfriend is messing around on the side with another girl, and the “side” chick is supposed to accept she is the fun for the night and that nothing more will come of this relationship.
Why are we, as a generation, promoting this idea? It is teaching some horrible lessons. It is saying that women can be nothing more than a sexual encounter. It is teaching girls that they can still have a man, but that man won’t care about her if she is not putting out. Is this really the view of women that we want?
On top of that, men are taught that it's OK to treat women with disrespect. They are taught that it's OK to lie to someone that is supposed to trust them, and this is not OK. They are also taught that it is OK to view women just for sexual pleasure.
Perhaps I am old fashioned, but this whole idea of a side chick just seems to have all consequences. Let’s leave the side chick in the past, and remember that when it's the right person, one is all you need.
I refuse to be a part of this side chick phenomenon, and you should, too.
