Our world is in chaos, but what really gets me is the most recent news topics to hit social media and the news in general. If you have not already heard, there has been information released about the "Princess syndrome." A "syndrome" that is characterized by little girls being exposed to Disney Princesses (Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, etc.) as a young child, and thus, when they are older, their mentality is that of something from a Disney fairy tale. Crazy, right? Or is this the truth? Well, I'm here to share my opinion on this new craze.
I grew up watching the classic Disney Princess movies. I grew up playing with the Barbie dolls and the Polly Pocket toys that were the real-life versions of those princesses. I played dress-up, pretending to be Jasmine and Belle, and so did my sister. Now does this mean that we have the "Princess syndrome?" Absolutely not. I know for a fact that neither my sister nor I have this syndrome. I know who I am as person and what I want out of life. I know that my sole purpose is not to find my "Prince Charming" and then get married days after meeting him. I know that the world is not all song and dance. I know that as a woman I will face challenges, but also that it is up to me to make my own destiny. Just because I was exposed to the Disney Princesses does not mean that I will make my life into the fairy tales created by Walt Disney and fellow creators.
Disney princesses at heart because we dream big and work hard for our dreams.
What I do know is that had I not been exposed to the Princesses, I wouldn't be who I am today. I am strong, independent, hardworking, and determined. This is all because my parents raised me to be the woman I am today. However, the princess taught me that it is never wrong to have hopes and dreams. Because what is life without having your head in the clouds once in a while?
To me, this "Princess syndrome" is just another way to put women in a box. So to all the little girls and all the big girls, enjoy the Disney Princesses. Dress up. Play. Imagine. But never forget that you are the creator of your own story, and no one can tell you what to do if you believe in yourself.
