As you walk onto any college campus, you'll notice that most of the students walking around have shirts on with three letters on them. These shirts are called jerseys, and these people are proudly showing off their sorority or fraternity letters. The letters are usually Greek letters. Now fast forward some, and you're at the homecoming game, 99% of the homecoming court are in a sorority. In extracurricular activities on campus there's also a huge prevalence of letters. It seems that the only way that you will really be considered a person on campus or in an organization is if you have letters. This is not fair and I'm calling for a change. Being in a sorority or a fraternity can be the best choice one makes. You'll have friends for life, you have people you can rely on, you create your own family when you're so far away from your actual family. Sororities and Fraternities do good work for the community as well like food drives, marathon races to raise donations, and sometimes they even work with the local school systems to help get equipment for them. There are very good things about being in a fraternity/ sorority. However, you can not pressure students (girls especially) into having letters and then bully them when they do go out and P.S.A. using your letters over fellow students is not ok. You don't have to have letters to do good in the world and just because you have letters doesn't mean you are doing good in the world and it definitely does not mean that you are better than someone else. There's so much more to a college experience than having letters. There's so much pressure to have letters so you can hold a leadership role, so you can be on homecoming court, so you get free passes for almost anything.
To the school officials: There's also students who have worth who don't have letters. Stop letting that influence how you treat students and how you pick leadership roles.
Disclaimer: This is not intended to spread hate about Frats/Sororities. It's a voice for those without letters who get treated like scum, and if you have letters and say that this isn't true, you're living in ignorance.
