The Power of Visualization when fulfilling your goals

It's important to see what you want in your mind before you attain it.

The power of visualization entails imagining achieving your goals before you actually achieve them. It's a great technique that helps in just about any aspect of life. As a student that could mean picturing yourself with your exam with an A written on it before you take it. It could be thinking about how much better you will look and feel after following your new workout routine and diet. It's important to see before you achieve because you might not even want that goal once you picture it.

For example, let's say you've been working hard at your job for a few months now in the hopes of saving up for a brand new truck. You want to get it lifted and put some crazy lights in it, so you imagine yourself driving that truck every day. You thought you'd be proud to drive it around town but when you actually imagined yourself driving it you realized that you live in Manhattan. A truck would be a nightmare. You picture being stuck in traffic and using all your gas in idle, then having to make a detour on your stop to the gas station to fill up for the second time this week. The point is, sometimes your goals can be misaligned.

The power of visualization is akin to meditation but rather than clearing your head, you are filling it with every sensory detail of your goals. What are you going to wear when you walk across that stage to get your diploma? Who are you going to see in the crowd? Where are you going to dinner to celebrate? All these questions implant the event in your mind, making it all the more likely you will get it done. The more you think about it the greater impact it will have on you.

If you aren't constantly thinking about your goals and where you want to be in the future then you might get stuck right where you are. How can you advance if you don't know where you are going? When you practice visualizing it may bring up a lot of questions and doubts. It is important to not let yourself get blindsided by these doubts but rather keep focused on the prize. The doubts will take care of themselves once you get there but it's important to stay on the path. Always remember that your actions yesterday brought you where you are today and that if you keep doing what you are doing then you are sure to succeed. Never lose sight of what you want!

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
