For 364 days out of the normal calendar year, it's really no big deal being single. Sure, some nights you wish you had someone to take you out on a date or binge-watch a Netflix show with you, so you don't feel so bad about your life. You're not bitter, though. You're cool with being single. Or at least that's what you tell everyone around you because they're all in love. But then Valentine's Day has to roll around and remind you just how single you are. Your friends are celebrating with their serious boyfriends and fiancés while you're planning how to make the most of your least favorite day of the year. But look up! Things are great when you're single on Valentine's Day, and here's why.
Discount chocolate.
Valentine's Day chocolate can be expensive. Every company is milking as much as they can out of suckers in love. But you know what happens the day after Valentine's Day: said chocolate goes on sale. Depending on your taste, those boxes are actually really good. Strawberry cream, caramel, chocolate mousse — each bite is a new surprise that brings you more joy than you like to admit. While everyone else was off getting ripped off on chocolate, you got the discounted box that you didn't feel obligated to share.
Save money.
Depending on the type of person you're dating, Valentine's Day can be a damper on the bank account — flowers, gifts, chocolate, dinner, and whatever other expenses can rack up. Needless to say, Valentine's Day can be expensive. But when you're single, you have no one to buy for and in the end, you save yourself a lot of money! This could go toward a massage, a new purse, a mani-pedi, or whatever sounds good to you. So instead of being sad that you don't have any plans for Valentine's Day, think of all the money you're saving. Who's the real winner here?
A day to watch Netflix.
Let's be honest, there are not enough hours in the week to get a whole lot of Netflix watching done. If you're a college student, free time is not in your vocabulary most of the time. And while Valentine's Day isn't a holiday that gives you the day off, it's the perfect time to rationalize spending the majority of the day (that you can spare) watching your fave show on Netflix. Instead of spending time picking between the little black dress or the blue top and skirt, you choose between "Scandal" or "Grey's Anatomy"!
No one to try for.
Instead of spreading out all the makeup tools and hair products in the world, or working out for multiple hours a day to make sure you look just right in the dress at the back of the closet, you just have to slip on a pair of comfy sweats and grab whatever snacks sound good for an evening of doing nothing. Another great perk of being single is you don't have to go the extra mile to make sure you look great for Valentine's Day, because the only person you have to impress at this point is your cat. So throw your hair up in a bun, put on something comfy, and try to forget just how single you are.
This Valentine's Day, look for the positives! It's not all depression if you're not in a relationship; there are plenty of things to look forward to.
