If you are like me, you like to be involved in anything and everything life offers. Like me, you probably tend to take on more than you should. You have a hard time saying 'no' because you want to do it all... and in our minds that is totally okay because we get to look back on all the things we have been able to do because we said 'yes!' instead of 'no.' The nickname "superman" or "superwoman" has probably been thrown around when someone hears or sees all you do.
Not many people understand why we take on as many roles as we do or why we juggle everything we have going on, but for some odd reason we enjoy it... Until we completely run ourselves down. We become physically and mentally exhausted, we get sick from exhaustion, and tend to have panic/anxiety attacks. If someone was to take a look at our planner they would ask when we have free time and our answer would be "what free time?" Honestly, sometimes we are so busy and do so much we don't even have time for lunch or dinner. None of these things are healthy/good for our bodies and we won't be able to give our all if there is nothing left to give.
I have lived this lifestyle since my ninth grade year of high school and now as a senior in college I am realizing I can't do it all. And that's okay. I am learning the hard way that there is a time/season in life where I can say 'yes' to (almost) everything, but there is also a time/season where I just can't. The season of not being able to do everything is upon me and it is hitting me hard.
If I continue to say 'yes' to everything and spend every minute of my day doing something, am I going to be able to give my 100% at everything I do? Maybe for a little while, but not for long. I'm not going to be able to make the most of my time doing what I scheduled at that moment because I am either thinking about what I have to do next or I'm just too exhausted from everything else. You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.
Time is precious and I have always wanted to make the most of my time by doing everything I can. However, I have realized now more than ever, as a senior, I have to truly prioritize the things I fill my time with. I have realized my time is needs to be more about quality not quantity.
Keep in mind that each superhero has their select few powers and things they are really good at. They don't have all the different powers and they aren't really good at everything. This is why they are great at what they do! Although I love being able to be superwoman and do it all, I am learning sometimes it is better to not do it all so that I can truly give my 100% to the things I am doing.
"It's only by saying 'no' that you can concentrate on the things that are really important" -Steve Jobs
