This year, I have slowly become the type of girl who has more guy friends than girlfriends. I have not always been this way, but, once I came to college, I realized that being around your guy friends is just so much more carefree and there is rarely ever any drama. Being one of the few girls in a guy friend group means that you are always guaranteed to have a fun time, which is why I am so close to so many guys. I have my close best friends who I know will be in my life for the rest of it. If I want to have a wine and movie night, there is no lack of close girlfriends in my life to call up. So, why not go ahead and be a bro during college?

During this school year, I have become extremely close with a fraternity on campus and I think of the brothers as my good friends. I have no interest in anything other than friendship with people in this stage in my life. I love my freedom and I know that a relationship would just fail miserably at this point in my life. I did the relationship thing for two years and now I am doing me. Right now, I would rather have many different friends than one guy who is holding me down when all that I want is to fly with the wind. This is why having a fake boyfriend is the best thing ever.

Asher, my fake boyfriend, is actually just a really close friend. He’s one of the people who I text when I am having a bad day to complain to, he’s the person who I ask to drive me to places because his car is closer than mine, and he’s the person who I eat lunch with basically every day. So, one day, I realized that he’s basically like my boyfriend. This is where the fake boyfriend part comes in. He is in no way my boyfriend, but he provides me with the type of friendship that a boyfriend should provide his girlfriend. We are so close that we have even both met the other's parents.

If I want to eat with someone, I know that Asher will always be there to go eat or to just sit with me if he has already eaten. When I am upset, he helps to calm me down. He accepts me for who I am. We go out on the weekends together and have the time of our life. Having a fake boyfriend basically gives me everything that a real boyfriend would provide me with, while allowing me to still have the freedom that I love so much.

Having a fake boyfriend is so great because he will be there for you for everything and the two of you won’t fight like boyfriends and girlfriends do. There are no expectations other than that he is there for you as a friend and that you are there for him as a friend. We get to wingman (or woman) for each other and have the ability to say “you owe me” when you set the other up with one of your closest friends. You’re welcome, Asher. We look out for one another and help the other out in any way that we can.

I am so thankful for my fake boyfriend and so glad that he came into my life when he did. I am not looking for a relationship, but I must admit that having someone who you know will be there for you 24/7 is a pretty nice feeling. That’s why Asher and I work so well. We have such a good friendship and I wouldn’t change anything about us.

So, thank you, Asher, for all that you do for me. Thank you for accepting me as your fake girlfriend and for being there to tell me that I am about to make a poor life decision. Thank you for at least trying to stop me from doing it. Thank you for not forgetting about me when I set you up with my roommate. Thank you for always sharing your drinks with me and always checking in to make sure that I am okay after a rough day/night. Thank you for letting me text your mom whenever you do something to piss me off so I can get you in trouble. I wouldn’t want to call anyone else my fake boyfriend.

Girls, go find yourself a fake boyfriend. It’s a great life decision.
