Award season is here, which means it's time to reflect on the previous year's movies and determine what was the best and deserving of an Oscar. Last Tuesday morning, the nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced. As soon as they were announced, social media was ecstatic for the amount of people of color that were nominated for this year's award shows.

Here are the nominations that People of Color were nominated in for the 2017 Academy Awards.

2. Best Actor in a Leading Role

Denzel Washington - Fences

3. Best Actress in a Leading Role

Ruth Negga - Loving

4. Best Actor in A Supporting Role

5. Best Actress In A Supporting Role

Of course, these are some of the nominations and these nominations are more than just nominations. It is important and powerful to see people of color being recognized for their talents, especially movies that tell African American history, such as Hidden Figures - history you won't find in the textbooks. Representation matters and I am forever here for it. Whether it is representation of people of color, Latinos, Asians, or what have you, it matters.

The 89th Academy Awards will be held on February 26, 2017 at the Dolby Theatre hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on ABC.
