The Not-So Sophomore Slump

This year I’m defying the odds.

The Not-So Sophomore Slump

We all hit that point when we (unfortunately) begin to realize that we have to start growing up. And while it is very evident that some people make this realization way way…way later than others, we all do it. And for me, it is happening now. Last year I was a carefree, dollar night loving kinda girl. You could almost always catch me out and about, because there was no way I was going to miss a single experience during my freshman year. But the reality is that unlike the bouncer that always let you get by with what clearly wasn’t your ID, you can’t fake your way through life.

As I was walking into class on my first day of sophomore year feeling tired and looking somewhat homeless, I suddenly realized how far behind I was. Being in a major of soon to be politicians and government employees will always make you feel like a little bit of a slacker, but especially after they all just had summers full of internships and resume boosting jobs. When the kid sitting next to me was diligently taking notes on the syllabus in his tie and obviously ironed shirt I knew this right here was my “I need to become an adult now” moment.

So you’re probably thinking that you’ve got plenty of time. Two or three more years to get your life together is totally adequate. Ehhhhh…well that’s debatable. But don’t worry your time will come soon. Maybe yours wont’ be as drastic as mine, but it will still undoubtedly happen. The desire to want to be successful in life comes from within. No amount of career fairs or talks about how you can only be claimed on your parents insurance for so much longer (so you should probably get a job that provides it) can convince you to take the initiative.

So as the semester progresses and you have a sudden desire to go to class, apply for internships, study, get exceptional grades, be involved around campus, AND maintain a social life on top of that. Go for it. And welcome to the not-so sophomore/junior/senior slump life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
