Now don't get me wrong, I'm a long-term advocate of New York City. I love the people, the places, the excitement. And while I may glamorize the city too much, lately I've discovered some not-so-great things about my beloved city.
1. You live in a shoebox apartment for the price of a house.
Chances are, you're spending your entire salary on your Barbie-sized studio apartment. Welcome to New York.
2. And that apartment contains rats or roaches.... or both.
You thought you were living in a one-person apartment, but there's hundreds of other habitants in your walls.
3. Those seemingly easy subway commutes aren't exactly pain free.
Not only is the MTA unreliable, but it's also the busiest commute of all time. Prepare to make like a sardine with your fellow subway riders.
4. Tourists take up every inch of the sidewalk.
The difficulty of swerving in and out of tourists has become a daily struggle. Not only do they take up an entire sidewalk, but they move at turtle pace, too.
5. The price of well, anything.
You're basically throwing away your money in the streets of the city. The only thing that comes cheap is dollar pizza.
6. Your all-black wardrobe can get a little dull.
I am a black wardrobe fanatic, but so is every other New Yorker. Good luck standing out in such a dull color.
7. And there's dog business on just about every corner.
I'm not quite sure how dogs are comfortable with doing their business on the sidewalk. Regardless, you're sure to step in it at least once.
8. Or garbage diggers....
The second a garbage bag hits the corner, crowds of dumpster divers are ready to dig through. One man's trash is another man's treasure, right?
9. You'll turn down one street corner and immediately regret it.
You go from the most popular street to a sketchy, empty alley. Get used to it, this will happen on a daily basis.
10. Your city is also 8.4 million other peoples' city.
It's the best city in the world, so everyone wants to live here. As a city habitant, you've got to learn to share your city... sadly.
But hey, I still love it.
