Years & Years Album Review

If you haven’t heard of the band Years & Years, then you have no idea what is happening in the music market right now. This band is absolutely spectacular and will definitely make a huge mark in the music industry this year, building them a force to be reckoned with. They are proving their worth in music with their outstanding and newly released album, “Communion”.

This album isn’t as holy as it sounds, breaking all the rules on what one considers electronic/pop music, probably because it isn’t either, but the PERFECT blend of both. In other words, you could easily sit in your car and listen to this album all day due to the new, refreshing sound that will possibly cause you rethink your music taste. While many people tend to stay in their genre of music, this album has so many great songs, all with a different feel to them and lyrics to match, making it so that there is at least one song for everyone to enjoy.

For a little backstory on these boys, this band formed all the way back in 2010, through the Internet nonetheless I might add. Two of the members Emre Turkman (synths) and Michael Goldsworthy (bassist) were searching through the Internet to start their own band and that’s when everything started to fall into place. It’s said that they discovered their vocalist Olly Alexander a short while later while he was singing in the shower at a friend’s place. From then on, they created Years and Years and slowly, but surely found their rise to fame.

If this still hasn’t persuaded you to give this album a listen, here is the music video to the bands hit single, “King”.

Not only is the song great, but also the artistry that they put into their music videos as well is so creative and unlike anything one would expect. They tell stories in these videos that are so riveting, only adding to their creative capabilities.

Although all of these songs are pure gold, two really stick out to me. One is more of a fast-paced piece by the name of “Real”. It begins with a quiet ascent that quickly turns into a hand-clapping beat sure to catch ones' attention. And by no surprise the song continues to build until you begin to hear the vocalist, Olly start singing in his signature high range. The beat and his vocals fit so smoothly together which is surprising considering how strong the rhythm is and Olly’s voice stays controlled and smooth.

Another song that really grabbed my attention is the song “Without”. It’s much slower for this band, but personally I think it is one of their strongest songs overall. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful while also heartbreaking, such as, “You’re in love, in love without me/ So close your heart, you’ll never find me/ Ohhh, you can hate me now/ ‘Cause I’ll be gone, and I’ll be with you or without.” Sad as these lyrics sound, this band couldn’t have pulled it off more smoothly. It is a stunning piece and really helps the album stand out and make it their own.

Years & Years couldn’t have done any better with this album and with it, they can only grow as a band. These men know what they are doing when it comes to their music and it is obvious that they will maintain their originality with whatever they create, since that is what makes them as fantastic as they really are in the first place. Give this band a listen; I can assure you that you will be glad you did.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
