Everyone preaches about volunteering, but let's be honest by saying that not many people practice what they preach.
Everyone can acknowledge that volunteering is an amazing thing to participate in. Community service is a great way to give back in multiple aspects. There is simply nothing better than helping those in need.
Growing up, there was always a place in my heart to volunteer. At a young age, I would countdown the summers until I was finally old enough to start volunteering at the local animal shelter. From there I started dedicating my summers and spare time to the Nashville Zoo. I have never had more fun than my summer spent with kangaroos. One of my favorite things about Greek Life is the fact that we all strive to enhance our specific philanthropies, while supporting them during designated events.
My sorority works to raise money and dedicate time to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. We are privileged to live so close to the local Nashville house. We go a few times a month to cook and clean for the families, as well as continuously collected pop tabs and raising money for the house to provide for families.
This past weekend, we held our annual Run for Ronald 5k. The 5k is held on our campus and we make a day of it to raise as much money as possible for RMHC. We hold a silent auction and carnival for the community. It was a great day of fun for everyone.
By working with the Ronald McDonald House and our local philanthropy, Camp Rainbow, I have learned so much about the need of my local community. The need is prevalent in every community.
You can fulfill the needs of your own community in numerous ways. Whether it is dedicating your personal time, making an in-kind donation, or a cash donation. Small efforts equate to big results.
There are many different charities and organizations in all communities that not only need, but deserve all the help that they can get. We, as humans, for whatever reason become generous during the winter holiday season. Yet, giving should be something that is always done without a second thought.
College has reassured me how essential volunteering is to keep a community healthy. I have gained so many leadership skills through volunteering. It has opened my eyes to the world's needs and now leads me through life continuing to dedicate my time to those in need.
