The "M" Word

"Generation Me" is tired of you.

They’re lazy, self-centered, and egotistical. They only care about themselves and what they can do. They only work when they have to and possess professional levels of complaining skills. Yes, everyone, we’re talking about mil…

Sorry, Odyssey isn’t too fond of profanities.

It’s not a profanity, you say? Well, why whenever there’s an article written about "those who shall not be named" are they never put in a positive light? Older generations will call this group of people sensitive, but it seems like the older generation is going way out of their way to be offensive.

Writing petty, uneducated articles on “What Happens When Mil******** Run The Workplace” doesn’t set much encouraging precedence for those who have yet to enter the workplace. Calling them entitled seems like a cop-out for those who may be just a little salty they didn’t have the opportunities young people have set before them now. And please, come at me for saying “salty” in an article because language isn’t fluid and doesn’t change.

Older generations will claim, in defense of their allegations, that they had it “tougher” than mil******** because they rode in the back of dad’s hatchback with no seat-belt and didn’t use Neosporin when they scraped their knees on pavement. Like their lack of safety education has any prevalence in the “cushy” world they created for the purpose of keeping future generations safe.

It’s also a common misconception that mil******** are this monolithic group of twenty-something-year-olds with no kids, no jobs (that you can see from their Instagram posts) and a sense of free-will with no care. This is far from the reality of many people who aren’t the children of the one percent. It’s anyone from age 20 to 35. That’s a lot of people.

Mil******** are parents, teachers and entrepreneurs. They are star athletes and track coaches and writers. They make $100,000 a year, $20,000 a year, sometimes nothing a year, because some did, upsettingly, get a degree that doesn’t pay. But who are you to blame people for chasing their dreams?

Mil******** are social activists, and despite all the racially charged activism on television, that's not the only way they've been attempting to change the world. They’re working with biologists and environmentalists to figure out climate change and how it’s affecting this world. They are women fighting for rights the same way there are trans people fighting for their lives. They’re techies, working for huge government organizations creating ways to keep cyberspace safe for the U.S.

These Facebook-complaining, reaction-video making, quasi-politicized mil******** are not the example. The trouble with our preceding generation is that they have a serious lack of trust and faith in us.

So to the older generation, hear this.

You are not mad at us for being young, unaware or entitled. You’re upset with our idealistic tendencies, yet seemingly lazy work ethic. You don't believe we know how to get what we want because you believe us to be too soft. However, you need to understand. We are your only hope. There is no amount of whiny Facebook posts or videos that will keep us from being dreamers, and you have to be fine with that. Why raise us like we deserve the sky but get upset when we reach for it? Seriously, stop wasting your energy. You might strain your heart too much and die before you can claim that Social Security we’re building for you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
