Cocaine, weed, LSD, acid, heroin, meth, molly, alcohol, Xanax, Quaaludes, prescriptions, nicotine whatever your particular poison, it is always something. Drugs and creativity, the ability to open the mind and see something completely different is, in ways, inspiring to people. Music and writing has evolved and changed almost entirely over time periods, claiming the inspiration, lives and masterpieces of these exact people.
Just recently watching classic movie, Almost Famous, I realized that the plethora of "Still Water" fans that seemed almost infinite was now replaced by screaming girls who worshiped One Direction or Justin Bieber. Don't get me wrong, Harry Styles is my guilty pleasure but my brain can't seem to fathom how rock and roll had some how slipped from the grip of our musical generation. Another thought then became, “If you live the life of a rock star or even around a band, you would have to do some kind of drug, it's all around you. No way you wouldn't try something just once". Aside from this, the music business and Rock and Roll genre particularly are a lifestyle. That's where we get “Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll". It all comes with the title. We have seen writers famously pinned for their drug use, Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland may come to mind. It has seemed that creativity and drugs just go hand in hand. Although personally I don't come in contact with drugs on a regular basis, I do find the motive behind these infamous drug abusers very intriguing.
One of the last things my mom said when she dropped me off at school was “Don't do drugs." I'm sure this is a tagline said, at one point or another, by all of our moms.
Sometimes this is what I wanted to reply (of course I didn't but I thought about it)
After growing out of my teenage angst years I realized that I was so happy she told me that, even though I never really showed any interest in drugs. Creative people like musicians, artists, writers, they need an outlet and sometimes the outlet starts as an aid and then becomes the outlet itself. Lets walk down memory lane for a minute:
The ever-so-famous Kurt Cobain
Kurt was the lead singer of Nirvana, a band attributed with making grunge music popular in the '90's. He was what many people labeled as a “misunderstood" artist. His body was found in his apartment, injected with a combination of heroin and Valium with a shot to the head. Yikes, depressing. Good music though ANSTY.
Jimi Hendricks
Personal fav, Jimi Hendricks was a ridiculous guitarist and definitely made his mark on music history. Unfortunately, he died after he asphyxiated on his own vomit after overdosing on heroin, but before that he famously played the national anthem at Woodstock. He cool.
Stephen King
This is the guy who basically wrote every good horror movie in the world: The Shinning, Carrie, etc. Which is kind of concerning, but luckily this one is still living! Yay, way to go Stephen. After battling with a heavy cocaine and drinking issue, he is clean and sober now, but he doesn't remember writing some of his most famous books. Yolo Stephen.
Elton John
Elton John was the poster child for Studio 54 and all of its “benefits"' He basically did all the drugs he could, but his favorite was cocaine. He admits to having epileptic seizures, passing out for a half hour, then waking up and snorting more coke. What a yolo. Pretty sure he's clean now.
Another Almost Famous reference, also the best part of the movie
Elvis Presley
Dadadamn boy. Apart from his killer looks, The King, was nothing short of famous. He began taking amphetamine pills to keep up the constant touring. After his divorce, he began taking more drugs and overdosed twice. It was his third overdose that finally took his life at age 42 at his home labeled Graceland, in Memphis, TN. He died from a toxic mixture of Valium, Demerol, codeine and morphine.
So next time your parents are like this:
And you're just like:
Think twice, or don't. I'm not your mom but let these famous rockers and authors be an example for a possible fate. Reveal in their addiction instead of following their same path.
