The Most Entertaining Performers Of Independent Music: Part 1
Gallivant

We have never been in a better time for musicians than we are right now. Rising artists have more resources than ever before to be found and discovered by listeners and critics alike. Whether it's music festival performances on YouTube, playlists on Spotify, or good old televised performances on late night shows; a new generation of independent musicians is rising. In the past few years, we have seen many great musicians rise from the indie scene and many of these artists have been noted to have incredibly wild and entertaining personalities, great live performances, or stories that have the ability to touch the listener. These are the most entertaining performers of independent music, accompanied by video links that most show their personalities and amazing talent.

1. Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands

Future Islands have been together for over ten years now, but it wasn't until March of 2014 when most of their current audience discovered this Baltimore band. On March 3rd, 2014, David Letterman introduced the band on his TV show and with it, the world was introduced to one of the most entertaining frontmen of the past couple of years. With dance moves like no other and a very different voice for the sound, Future Islands would grow increasingly popular. Herring is not only in Future Islands, but also has two other projects, one in which he dresses up as a snail with members from other Baltimore bands, as well as a hip hop career that is slowly rising up. Herring has quickly become a favorite among festival attendees, music listeners, and television watchers, and likely will remain a favorite for years to come. Watch the Letterman performance that put them on the map below.

2. Mac Demarco

Seeing Demarco for the first time, most people are put off by the looks of this Canadian songwriter. Within a video uploaded by Pitchfork, Demarco has referred to his look as that of a "homeless guy". Despite his looks, Demarco is an accomplished songwriter and an entertaining musician, having two of his albums achieve the "Best New Music" title on Pitchfork's website. However, one of the more intriguing parts of Demarco is his personality. Within interviews, Demarco can be seen as a goofy, witty, and almost cartoonish as a person, making him one of the most entertaining performers in independent music. Watch the Canadian musician play Pitchfork's Over/Under below.

3. Ty Segall

Segall is by far the most outlandish and wild of the performers on this list. Although he has performed in a slew of bands, Segall is most well known for his solo career. Within his musical career, Segall has released many EPs and singles, and a total of eight studio-produced albums. In the past year, accompanied by a band that call themselves The Muggers, Segall has begun to perform many of his shows wearing a baby mask and bringing with him a fake intestine and drooling all over his face. Although most definitely off-putting, Segall has achieved a small cult-following and many applaud him for his musical career. Watch Ty Segall and The Muggers perform on KEXP below.

4. Daniel Armbruster of Joywave

Joywave is perhaps the most irony-focused band around today. In the short while that they've had a name for themselves, they have crafted a song that pokes fun at bands who add whistling and the word "hey" into their songs. They released this troll album entitled Swish, and have entitled one of their performances as "the best song of all time". Although they joke quite a bit, their lead singer, Armbruster, has one of the most amazing falsettoes that has been heard, and according to news outlets, one of the most visually stunning and energetic performances at Coachella this year. Watch Joywave perform their ironically-crafted song "Destruction" at Coachella, or, as they've titled the video, "Live at Woodstock '99", below.

5. Dara Kiely of Girl Band

When I first heard Girl Band in preparation to attend Pitchfork this year, I was immediately put off by what I found to be a noisy and nonsensical sound. After playing them a second time, I was intrigued. By the third time I heard them, I could see both the appeal of the band's distinctive sound and Kiely's garbled yelling, but also the disgust that is associated with them by some. However, I have recently found only respect for the sound of this band and a personal fancy for them mostly due to the touching story behind their debut album Holding Hands with Jamie. After researching this Dublin band, I have found that the lead singer, Kiely, went through a long psychotic episode following a breakup. During this time, he lived in a tent in his mother's garden, attempted to give away everything he owned, and, one of the more fruitful yields from his experience, wrote every single day. Kiely's story has helped him with his creative process (he describes his episode as "weird but positive), crafted an album with a new fresh sound that people won't soon forget (Holding Hands with Jamie has managed to score a 7.8 on pitchfork.com), and has helped give birth to Girl Band's new and different sound to the noise rock scene. Watch the band perform their song "Paul" at Pitchfork Music Festival 2016 below.

I hope you have enjoyed this list of some of the performers I find entertaining in the independent music scene today. Make sure to follow me and stay tuned for next week where I will continue my list of fun performers!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
