Why The Kardashian's Should Not Be Role Models

This is probably an unpopular opinion.

Nearly everybody knows about the Kardashian family. Even if you do not know much about them, you have at least heard of them. They are famous/infamous for their own personal reasons, but they came together as a family and created this empire that the world is now drooling over. Why? What makes the Kardashian family the most famous family in America?

The Kardashian family has their own reality TV show and America watches is awe. They’re on the cover of every magazine and plastered all over social media. What did they do to deserve this? Was it Kim’s sex tape or her “Break the Internet“campaign? Was it Kylie’s lipstick line or her overly plumped lips? Or was it Chris (Caitlyn)’s sex change? It’s like every corner we turn, a Kardashian is doing something new, either scandalous or just flat out annoying.

The Kardashian’s may be a lot of things, but they are not role model material. A role model is, by definition a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated. A role model is what someone wants to be, someone who inspires. These women in the Kardashian family are not known for doing very noble things. Personally, I do not think these women deserve the title of role model.

These days, women are accomplishing incredible things and exceeding men in so many areas. There are some extremely influential women doing work to make this world a better place to live in. Women like Jaha Dukureh, who is fighting against female genital mutilation in Gambia or like Bindi Irwin, who is working with conservationist and other scientists to learn more about wild animals while teaching the world at the same time. Bindi is only seventeen years old, taking after her late father, Steve Irwin. These two examples of empowering women are real role models making strides for education and making a contribution to the well-being of this planet. These women actually inspire action.

I want to make this clear, the Kardashian’s are not horrible people. They have actually done some decent things in their time of fame. Kylie has her own makeup company and she is only eighteen years old. Kendall is only twenty years old and she is modeling for Victoria’s Secret and is sponsoring her own line of clothing at the popular clothing store Pac Sun. Other family members, like Khloe, are doing notable things like fitness inspiration. Caitlyn Jenner (previously known as Bruce Jenner) is making strides for the LGBT community. I actually admire the family in a way. They made their fame and fortune in an abnormal way and managed to keep the attention of most of the world.

You cannot really oppress someone who manages to keep the world on their toes just by existing and making millions of dollars doing so. It is honestly pretty cool. However, The Kardashian’s are far from role models. I do not want to see the youth thinking a leaked sex tape or living a scandalous life on reality TV is the way to live a wholesome life. Role models should be someone who can mentor the youth and inspire them to be someone great, not a Kardashian.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
