It seems like over the last five to six years Raidohead has been praised to almost god like proportions, with many bloggers and even popular online publications such as Consequence Of Sound and even Pitchfork using the band almost as some sort of a gold standard.
For the life of me I don't understand why Radiohead is regarded as almost world leader status by so many people. Admittedly, I do like a few Radiohead songs, maybe like 10 from various albums (arguably their top tracks), and I enjoy these songs for what they are.
Such songs as "Paranoid Android" and "Creep" easily embody the greatness that was mid-90s music. However, after OK Computer, the band understandably grew as artists and went in a more experimental direction after having their brief moment with radio-friendly rock.
If I or anyone else for that fact is being honest, looking at their body of work from then 'til now they have had little to no songs that have had a lasting impact.
Which is why when their first single "Burn The Witch" from their latest album "A Moon Shaped Pool" I was puzzled on why It was such a big deal that there was new Radiohead.
I mean "Burn The Witch" as well as the other singles are good music, but it sounds like the other 25 Electro-Indie bands touring and being played on radio.
How can one band illicit such response from people?
I would say there is a large amount of music that comes out today that is more satisfying, interesting and relevant than Radiohead ever was of ever has been.
I listen to past Radiohead offerings such as "King Of Limbs" and "In Rainbows" and They are ok, but its not great. Maybe its just that I am not into the whole experimental-electro-synth-feedback-laced "ooooooh-ing".
Personally, I think back '07-'08 (when that whole Radiohead Influenced sound was at its height in terms of actually being relevant and mattering) when bands such as Band of Horses, The National, Frightened Rabbit, Iron & Wine and My Morning Jacket were beating Radio head at their own game.
These Bands were a lot more musically relevant and satisfying than arguably anything Radiohead has put out since "Kid A".
I'm not hating on Radiohead at all. I just don't understand all the hype and Jesus-like adoration that surrounds them. I just don't believe they are the pioneering artists they are often made out to be.
In a lot of ways I compare them to giant sports teams like the Yankees. A lot of people LOVE the yankees not because they have any connection to the team or New York itself, but because its safe to.
I think people understand that they have legions of fans and that will continue to do well and serve their audience.
There are many amazing and innovative musicians and bands that could use all of this un-explained support and love.
I'm not saying don't listen to Radiohead.
I'm just saying don't listen to Radiohead because some misunderstood hipster with a black asymmetrical haircut and gauges in his ears was wearing a worn-out Kid-A T-shirt.
