When my family and I decided to go see the movie "The Intern," I went in with really no expectations. However, I left very pleasantly surprised. This movie was absolutely delightful. It was so sweet at times it could rot your teeth, but it also had some very nice emotional moments.
This film, directed by Nancy Meyers, is about a recently retired widower named Benjamin, played by Robert De Niro. Ben is beginning to search for a new purpose in life, and a way to fill some of his free time. He sees an ad for a company called 'All About the Fit' looking for a senior citizen intern. He lands the position and meets the founder of the company, Jules, played by Anne Hathaway. At first Jules feels like she doesn't need any help. However, she and Ben become fast friends.
At first, I was apprehensive about seeing Robert De Niro in this role. Having just recently watched "Taxi Driver" for the first time, it felt strange seeing him as a retiree learning how to use Facebook. However it didn't take long for that to fall away and for me to fall in love with the character of Benjamin. Ben is the quintessential paternal figure. He is observant without prying, and always has the right advice; advice that only comes with experience.
Anne Hathaway as Jules was also a great performance. After all, one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies is "The Devil Wears Prada." Hathaway's performance is just as wonderful in this film - and her wardrobe is just as fantastic.
I enjoyed how this film touched on a wide range of topics in a great way. The problem I normally have with romantic, lighthearted comedies is there's not much depth to the plot. This film, however, continuously surprised me. It brought up topics such as loss of a loved one, how to accept a failing relationship and move on, and gender equality in the workplace. These issues were brought up in a casual way, but the effort was there. I think this surprising complexity is what impressed me the most and what made the film so enjoyable.
