What is the definition of Autism? Autism is a disorder that affects the brain. Children who have Autism have difficulty speaking, writing, and interacting socially with others. There is such a variety of Autism Spectrum (commonly known as the Autism) that people don't know about. Too many who do not have knowledge of Autism the definition of Autism to them is simply seeing children with a special need. These children were called “retarded” years ago, which is now politically incorrect term.
As a childcare provider, I view an Autistic child as intelligent and smart. A child who has Autism can rote parts of their favorite script as if they have just watched it two minutes ago. My main goal as their childcare provider is to bring out the child's special talent. In order to bring these special talents out the childcare provider must have a series of patience and passion.
Working with Autistic children is not made for everyone. The reason behind this is because many Autistic children have so many problem behaviors. Some of the most common behaviors of an Autistic child are known as biting and injuring themselves and others, but it does not stop there. Other behaviors you may see in Autistic children are hitting, throwing, kicking, spitting, screaming, tantrums, and running. These children may perform these intense behaviors for several of reasons such as seeking attention and wanting it their way. By any means an Autistic child is not performing these behaviors to harm a person, but this maybe their only way to communicate. When a child acts in such intense behaviors this may put a strain on the family and the care providers and teachers at school. Some schools may feel that they are doing anything and everything to stop these behaviors. Schools use research based methods such as ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) to stop these behaviors from occurring.
Sometimes I feel that as these children need is a little more love and attention and their behavior will decrease. Myself on the other hand, regardless of all the challenges that come with working with a child who has Autism, I love the field of study I have chosen. I love what I do. As a childcare provider, I can say that there is never a dull moment and I enjoy every minute of it.
