One of the biggest voting blocks that is starting to become more relevant and vocal within the political sphere are the millennials that are starting to reach the voting age over the past five years and begin to become more involved in their political scenes.
One of the easiest ways for people to get involved in their political scenes is to remain informed about the issues that are relevant within politics at any given time. Millennials are one of the first groups in this new political landscape that have the ability to access a multitude of different news sources in order to get a complete and more diverse look at the news that surrounds their daily lives. This new age of of news-gathering is taking the news world by storm by having entire generations of citizens having the latest news at the touch of their fingertips.
For Millennials, the increase of social media within their daily lives and their ease of access to it makes it a prominent feature of their daily lives and primary source of how they obtain a good portion of their news within a day. From Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and a wealth of other social media platforms millennials have no problem getting a constant stream of different articles and information about a number of different topics that appear in their lives.
For a number of Millennials these topics fall around a number of different political and social issues that are being brought up in their lives. Social media has been a particularly useful tool for being able to connect different populations of millennials throughout the world and rallying their thoughts behind certain political or social events. Events like the #BlackLivesMatter movement which was initially sparked the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
The Young Turks, which is a news organization that is run through Youtube and has gathered quite a number of followers over the years, recently held an event in the Newseum Institute in Washington D.C discussing the way that millennials get their Political news in this growing age of social media and the distancing of the millennial generation from the traditional news sources that were held by previous generations in television and newspaper. The talk hosted a number of different representatives from various news sources within the political atmosphere; such as a member of the Huffington Post, a representative from Instagram, and a member of the political news source MIC. For Millennials, the important thing to remember is having convenient access to the information that you are providing. Which means finding a way to attract an audience to the news that you are reporting on. Whether this means the inclusion of attention grabbing but softer stories is a major question that is starting to be answered by numerous news sources. This is a major change for a number of different mediums who are used to audiences seeking them out instead of having to attract their audiences to their content. Although this change is not entirely unwelcome as its inclusion in the different news programs content lineup has started to attract new and diversifying audiences to their papers, broadcasts, or websites.
