To the Indecisive Person

You're not alone.

To the Indecisive Person

Why is it that at a young age we have to decide what we want right away? Most of the time, I don't even know what I want to eat at the dining hall. We were always asked when we were little kids what we wanted to be when we grow up and we always had an answer. It was usually something like being a vet, doctor, astronaut, or even a teacher. If you're reading this and you followed what you wanted to be from when you were a child to your adult life, then I have to give you props. On the other hand, if you're like me, then you must be having a hard time deciding your future as well.

When I was in high school, I loved animals and working with them. I'm sure there was something that you love too and want to pursue as a career. Sadly, I decided to change career path due to money reasons. I can tell you now that it may have been a mistake. Of course, it's only my first year of college and I'm going to give it a chance before I make any decisions.

I got to thinking after I had a conversation with my friend. I remember him telling me that he knew what he was doing wasn't going to make him a boatload, but it's what he loved. The phrase what I love was carved into my head after that talk and it got me thinking. Now I just started college and it is tough, I'm not going to lie.

If there is anyone reading this and you haven't reached college yet, or even high school, and you're trying to figure out your life, then just hear me through.

1. Make A List

Think about your strengths and weaknesses. Write down what you love to do and the pros and cons of each. I know you may be thinking "How can there be a con to something I love?" but, trust me, there can be. Making a list can be time-consuming, but it may be worth it in the end.

2. Do The Research

Look deeper into some of the things you want to do. Doing this may help you further realize it's what you do or don't want. Also look up schools that may have this major or are well known for it.

3. Money Doesn't Matter If You're Not Happy

Yes, money is important in making the decision, but it's not everything. If you go to work hating your job every day, then what kind of life is that? Be happy with what you want and if you can find a job that pays well and you love, well, then that's great.

Don't be afraid to take time to figure out what you want. You're only as limited as you make yourself feel. It's really tough deciding what you want to do the rest of your life and I'm sure you're not the only one trying to figure it all out. Once you do, though, it makes life a little bit easier.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
