ALin-Manuel Miranda is one of my heroes, for many reasons. I first heard his name from the hit Broadway musical" Hamilton". Honestly, the first time I listened to it I didn't like it. I thought it was a ridiculous idea and absurd. A few months went by, and I tried again. This time I fell in love. I don't know what changed in that time, but I'm glad it did because my love of "Hamilton" has blossomed into a slight obsession. (Maybe a little more than a slight obsession.) Miranda read an biography about Alexander Hamilton's life and thought it would make a great rap musical, and it sure did. It is his brainchild. He wrote the book, score, and starred in it. How?! I still ask myself that question everyday.
After watching the Tony's, my love for this man only grew. "Hamilton" was nominated for a record number of Tony's -- 16 in total and winning 11. Lin-Manuel looked at everyone in cast as if he was a proud father. It was incredible to see the love in his eyes for everyone. It was incredible to hear his speech. This year the Tony's took place hours after the massacre in Orlando. During his acceptance speech he chose to remember the people who were slain. I've included the clip with the hope that you will take the time to watch his incredible speech.
This speech had me looking more into Miranda's life. The further I looked, the more inspired I became. He is such a kind and genuine man, which is obvious to see. He is also a caring husband and father. (He even wears his son!)
His wife, Vanessa Nadal, was his high school sweetheart. She is currently an attorney and a scientist! Throughout his journey he has always said it was only achievable because of her. He stands behind her in everything she does, as she does with him. They really are #relationshipgoals. (I also strongly suggest looking more into her life, as she is a great inspiration as well!)
He genuinely cares for his fans too. Every morning and evening, with a few exceptions of course, he tweets inspirational words to his followers. There's just something about him that makes me feel like I can do anything. I'm not the only one who thinks that either. Time Magazine included him in The 100 Most Influential People this year.
This is a man who has influenced a huge group of people, all while staying grounded. If there was ever a man to call a role model, it's him. He has managed to be a father, husband, friend, playwright, educator, and goofball, without letting his immense fame get to his head. I strongly suggest reading up on Miranda, listening to "In the Heights" and "Hamilton", and watching his interviews. (Specifically with Stephen Colbert.)
What did we do to deserve Lin-Manuel Miranda?
